really old grapefruit?

We got a huge box of grapefruit delivered to my office before Christmas. There are 8 poor fruits left in the kitchen. I don't think anyone is going to try to eat them at this point. Is there anything I can cook/bake with them? What about Nigella's Clemenite Cake - could I substitute the grapefruit or would that be disastrous?

Thanks!

    1. If they aren't moldy and smell okay when cut I would just section the lot and you would be more likely to eat them that way or if nothing else I would juice them

        1. taste the juice. they're probably too old and stinky. you won't want to make a sweet cake with them, for sure.

if they're not too shrively, cut in half, and broil with brown sugar on top.

            1. I have had grapefruits in the fridge for over 2 months that looked and tasted fine - if they were freshly harvested when you got them they may still be good.

Minority opinion here: I made that Clementine Cake only once, using Meyer Lemons. I really, really, hated it. It sat uneaten in Rubbermaid in the back of the fridge for a long time before I offered it to the dogs, who ate it on principle but did not clean the plate. I couldn't taste the almond, even though I'd added some extract, and I thought the texture was pasty/greasy.

                1. re: greygarious

greygarious, you are not in the minority on using the grapefruit for the cake.

i think it is hilarious that the dogs ate your meyer lemon cake "on principle." ;-).

                  fwiw, meyer lemon (half-clementine, half-lemon) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meyer_Lemon

                  clementine:
