  • 7

A friend wants to have his birthday at a brazilian steakhouse in manhattan. I know of several in the ironbound district in Newark, but sadly it is not manhattan. I have been to the place in Times Square and yuck. Help!

  1. The only one i go to is Plata Forma. Its good, Greenfields in queens in its day was good, i think it went way downhill though

      There's also Porcao on Park

      1. Honestly, they are all poor, no matter what anyone tells you.
Plataforma actually used to be quite good and priced well.
That was 8 years ago and then they went with the very American business plan
of higher prices, horrible product and of course a clientele that neither knows nor cares
enough to boycott. Remember the word "yuck" that you used? Well.....

I couldn't disagree with you more. My first visit to Plataforma was 8 years ago and my last was last summer. I've noticed no falloff in quality. Zero.

The prices have definitely gone up but it was never cheap. I haven't run a spreadsheet on this but meat prices in general, from supermarkets to restaurants, have increased sharply over that time. The price increases at Plataforma have occurred at roughly the same rate.

Plataforma has never offered steakhouse quality beef but it's fine for what it is. If you're selective in waiting for the servers to bring out particular cuts that you like you can eat reasonably well.

To the original poster: you can hold down the bill by avoiding the pricey desserts and not overdoing the drinks. They can drive up the cost dramatically.

I stopped going 8 years ago and I am quite sure it didn't get better. There was a group that all liked it back then and everyone pretty much agreed it started to suck. I have heard nothing from anyone who has gone after that time to think it got good again.
Y, meat prices have risen, sure. But not only did the big spike in those occur only in the last few years, it was way more by Plataforma and ingredient costs of X percent should not translate to the same percentage in dish costs. I am not saying they cannot charge whatever they like, they can and do. Just saying, it is not because of the price of medium(or worse)quality, cheaper cuts of meat.
You are right about the drinks, those will make the bill completely intolerable for the quality.

I didn't sufficiently research Plataforma, and went to visit it this weekend after having it recommended to me. It isn't terrible, but it isn't particularly special. The pork was overcooked and dry, the steak was underseasoned. There was no caramelization on any of the meat.

Shaving steak off of a sword is pretty fun and all, but this restaurant wouldn't rate more than a B- in my book.

          3. One more, wish i just recently visited and LOVED...nice space.
