dried porcini mushrooms-best price?

holleygolitely Jan 25, 2009 09:56 AM

I am going to make a bolognese sauce for a big crowd. I usually get my porcini at Gelsons or Whole Foods. Can anyone suggest a place to buy them a bit more cheaply? West LA/BHCulver City area...I don't think Trader Joe's carries them.

I bought a 2-lb sack of prime porcini for about $60 at Surfas a while back. I think it's well priced. The mushrooms are good sized and not crushed.

CORRECTION: I lied: it was a 1-lb bag for $42.50, and that was at least a year ago. Sorry!

You can buy online. Be careful what you purchase as not all Porcinis are created equal. And here's a previous post on the topic:

I've seem a dried mushroom mix at Costco that looks good.

Never tried them myself, so can not advise one way or the other. Anybody else seen/used the Costco mix?
