Tips for Dining, Eating and Food Shopping in the South

Lempira in Charlotte

Has anyone tried this place? It's a Honduran/Mexican restaurant on South Blvd. near Archdale. I had lunch there last week and enjoyed it. I went in with a co-worker, and we were the only two "gringos" there. Everyone around us ordered a seafood stew (can't remember what it was called), but it looked quite good. It had crab, clams, shrimp and other shellfish. My co-worker got it, and it defintiely took a great deal of work, as the shells had to be cracked (and there were a lot of them). The broth ahd a bisque-like flavor and there were many treasures at the bottom (various types of seafood). It came with some tasty rice and a trype of thin bread to dip in the broth. I was the only one in the entire place who did not order this stew. The chefs in the back must have been making fun of me when I ordered the Honduran Enchiladas (since I was the only person no to order the stew). The Honduran Enchiladas are siginificantly different than the Tex-Mex enchiladas in most places. At the bottom are crisp tortillas topped with ground beef, black bean puree, cabbage, cheese, and tomatoes, among other things. It was quite good, but I do think I'll get the stew when I go back.

I would recommend the place, but don't go there if you're crunched for time. The service, while friendly, was very slow. And if you get the seafood stew, with all the work you have to do, you'll be there even longer.
