San Francisco Bay Area

Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in the SF Bay Area (including Berkeley, Oakland, Napa, Sonoma, Marin, and San Jose)

Going to San Francisco in a Month

Any suggestions for great restaurants, hot spots...just wonderful food would be greatly appreciated. Especially Mexican, Japanese, Dim Sum, and Californian or New American. We are staying downtown (a block from Macy's) but we do have a car so we can travel around the town for good eats!

  1. I knew I'd seen this before. In the southern part of San Mateo County, close by the Pacific Ocean is an old restaurant called Duarte's. Good pies and artichoke soup. Nice stop if you are driving in that area.

    1. Don't know why you have gotten so few hits but I guess this other thread will give you some ideas and maybe some more suggestions.

Thank you very much for the thread! I am looking at it for suggestions.

      2. For New American, I would highly recomend Maverick's in the Mission District. Besides great food it also has an excellent domestic wine list. Parking is somewhat difficult in that area so BART or a cab might be easier.

Right in the area you are staying, you should try Canteen -- more Californian. It has a limited menu and limited seating but is a real find.

Canteen looks WONDERFUL! We might head to Maverick for their wine seminar Wednesday...it looks like fun. Thank you so much for the suggestions!

May I second Canteen? Really worth a visit with just one warning: it fills up quickly, especially for the coveted 7:30 seating, so you might want to phone for a reso tout de suite. We couldn't get one the first time we tried three weeks ahead! I'm also torn between the cosy wee booths and sitting at the counter where you can see all the cooking action...

I think that we are going to go for the sitting at the counter to see the cooking action. I will call Canteen tomorrow so that I can make a reservation. Thx for the heads up.

We just made our reservation for Canteen and on a Friday night at 7:30...Very exciting! I will post about my experience when I return

Don't forget to enjoy your dinner roll. Some people neglect it because they want to save room for the main event. Big mistake.
