This might sound weird.

Last night as I ate a can of nice brisling sardines, I realized that I've always discarded the oil they're packed in. I hate to be wasteful, and I especially hate to throw away anything I can use.

I found one recipe online for a sardine/chili/caper pasta that uses the canning oil to cook the sauce (below). Those fish are so mild that I don't think this would turn into a stink bomb.

But is there some other obvious use I'm missing? Something uncooked maybe? I don't own a dog, and the cats turn up their noses at anything but kibble.

That recipe (which I do plan on trying soon): http://www.makansutra.com/forums/singapore/viewtopic.php?p=127205&sid=7e9d8aaa318e18ad6f506c333d5d92f7

If I'm having my sardines with a salad, as I often do for lunch, I'll use the oil (olive in all the ones I buy) to make a vinaigrette. Or if I'm eating them with cottage cheese I just stir some oil, chopped green onion and a dash of salt into that. This was a favorite desk/drawing table lunch back in my employed days - usually just got some crackers and used those as eating utensils.

I've just found smoked oysters in olive oil, too. I never used the oil they're typically packed in because it's cottonseed, and by some fluke of the law there's no restriction on pesticide content because cotton isn't a food crop! But olive oil I will happily use.
