Greek Cheese

frenchsecondempire Jan 19, 2009 09:36 AM

Hounds, I am making moussaka, and the recipe calls for kefalotiri cheese. Where is a Greek grocer that might carry this item? Since I live in Monrovia, locations in the San Gabriel Valley are preferable. However, I will travel elsewhere in the Los Angeles area if a source is found.

The owners of Cheviot Farms (sometimes called Farms Cheviot for reasons I don't totally grasp) on National in West LA are Greek. You may just want to call them and see if they have any ideas.

I am not certain about this particular cheese, but I was at Dogwoods yesterday (on Foothill in Monrovia) and noticed they had several different Greek cheeses.

Some of their stuff (esp produce) didn't look that fresh however, so I would be sure and check the dates on anything for purchase.

Many thanks--I have already checked Dogwoods--and you are right, you have to check the merchandise (especially produce) before you buy.

Try Papa Cristo on Pico near Normandy in LA. they not only have every kind of Greek cheese, their other deli items are wonderful as well...some of the best olives in the city

I second Papa Christo. You may want to check Jons as well, just in case they might have it at the deli counter.

I would at least check at Whole Foods, Bristol Farms, Gelson's and Trader Joe's, if any of these are near you. I know that I have seen kefalotori in at least some of these. It's not that hard to find!

I am pretty sure Traders does not have.

Papa Cristos absolutely has it. I have bought it from them before.
