Fish Dumplings In Chinatown?

Though they're relatively common in Los Angeles, I can't recall seeing fish dumplings on the menus of any of the Chinatown dumpling houses I've been to. The only reference I can find is some kind of fish dumpling at Bo Ky. Are there any other leads?

  1. i think you're kind of out of luck, i know what you're talking about b/c most of the dumpling specialists in LA have fish dumplings, but none of the manhattan dumpling specialist serve them

the only places ive seen them in manhattan are at bo ky and they serve them in a noodle soup (they're alright, nothing to write home about). I believe a place in flushing mall serves them, but i havent tried them there yet

I've seen them at the Roosevelt Food Court but not in Manhattan yet.

And they're the one thing that I havent liked there.

        1. re: scoopG

sorry scoopG is right i meant the Roosevelt Food Mall not the Flushing Mall

      2. We got plenty of those in LA.. haven't found in any in NY

The X.O. Kitchen (the one on Hester street, not Walker street) seves something called "freshwater eel dumplings" Not sure if that's what your looking for.

        2. I might be thinking of the wrong item, but Oriental Garden has fish balls on their dim sum menu and they are very good.
Similar fish balls in soup at young city

          1. re: wew

yeah these are different than what chandavkl is talking about. Chandavkl is literally talking about dumplings filled with minced fish

            1. re: Lau

Oh, is it dumplings with minced fish? I was under the impression that fish dumplings are the ones where the skin has fish incorporated and filled with pork meat (the cantonese translation is fish skin dumpling). Is this a different thing?

Of course, it is not fish ball. Though fish balls is also one of my favorites and good ones are hard to come by!

              1. re: kobetobiko

yeah its actually a dumpling with minced fish filling although i think there maybe one that has fish and pork in the filling

there are alot of northern chinese dumpling specialists in LA (who are very good btw) who started serving this; it mightve been around for a long time, but i only tried it more recently

                  Hi Lau,

Thanks for your explanation. I don't think I have this kind of fish dumplings before, but I am certainly intrigued. I was thinking about the Cantonese fish dumplings like the ones in the picture.

I have also tried the ones at Bo Ky and thought they were pretty poor.

ive had those before although i dont know if realized there was fish in the skin, but yeah these are just like any other steamed dumplings except the filling is different. I like them, but they're not my favorite dumpling although def worth trying if u happen to be able to

                  2. re: Lau

Fish dumplings started showing up in the mid-1990s, though they were initially a specialty item from a small number of restaurants. However, after the opening of Dumpling 10053, which apparently was hatched from a since departed dumpling restaurant on Pell Street, the majority of new dumpling restaurants are likely to have fish dumplings. Most typical is minced sole with either chives or parsley, though occasionally you'll see minced cod dumplings, and as you pointed out, fish mixed with pork.

            2. a few days ago, I would have had no idea what you were talking about, but my interest was piqued by this SE article that mentions them
              http://newyork.seriouseats.com/2008/1...
if these are the dumplings you are talking about, the article mentions that they come from a Taiwanese stall, so maybe a Taiwanese restaurant in Chinatown would have them.

              1. re: ian9139

yeah thats what i was saying that they do have them in flushing, but i dont think they are supposed to be all that great

fyi, there is basically no taiwanese food in manhattan ctown

                1. re: Lau

Is Jobee a taiwanese restauarnt? I heard they have stinky tofu or the little tube-shaped sticky rice dish(hope you know what I am referring to, the classic taiwanese dish) but have never tried.

                  1. re: kobetobiko

well jobee was, but i think it closed, there is like one or two places including excellent pork chop house that serve some taiwanese food, but i none of them are very good and they're offerings are pretty limited

                    1. re: kobetobiko

Kobe, yes Jobee is Taiwanese. Their Stinky Tofu is for takeout only. I wonder why! Little Lamb on Main Street in Flushing has Fish Dumplings. They are an optional item in their hot pots. Small, delicate and quite tasty.
