Special birthday dinner for 2 - please help

Looking for some suggestions for a 25th birthday dinner for myself + boyfriend. When it's his night to celebrate, we always end up at a classic steakhouse, which isn't exactly my forte. However, since it's my birthday, I get the option to dine somewhere that is more my style - and I love tapas, cuban, italian, or restaurants with eclectic menus/offerings. Realize that is a wide spread, but I am very much open to your recommendations.

Any suggestions? Location is less important than the restaurant itself. Thanks so much in advance!

Degustation serves french/Spanish tapas at a comfortable bar (kind of like a sushi bar), in front of the kitchen. It is definitely a bit different, and you can easily eat there for less than $150 pp

Food-wise, I would second Degustation. Awesome, awesome food there. The one issue is seating-wise, it's kind of bar-style. Not to say it at all looks like a bar, but your sitting around the kitchen (which is cool because you watch them cook everything), but if you are looking for a place where you can kind of face each other, this one could be tough. But it is a truly fantastic restaurant.

I would recommend either Convivio or Alto. Sister restaurants, they both have the same chef, Michael White, and his food is superb. At Convivio, the vibe is true to its name -- convivial -- while the more upscale Alto has low-key ambiance.

Yes, to narrow it down, I would say $250-300 range (for two) would be the goal. Thanks very much.

For my 25th birthday, I flew out to Las Vegas and met my bf and another couple there for the weekend (we flew in from Chicago, SF, and Boston). I decided that since I made it to a quarter century, the occasion should be celebrated in the tackiest place we could come up with.

On a more reasonable note, since it's your birthday, it really should be what you want, unless your birthdays are the same day? (one of my friends shares a birthday with her husband)

price range or maximum you want to spend for the entire meal would be helpful for narrowing it down...
