Advice on special occasion dinner

I'd like to take my husband out to a really special dinner for his birthday at the end of the month -- he's a big foodie and really into wine, so we'd likely do a tasting menu with wine pairing. Unfortunately, I'm way too late to make a reservation at French Laundry, but would love advice on where else would be appropriate. I've heard maybe Chez Panisse or Fleur de Lys? Somewhere with a legendary chef and really beautiful fine dining experience. I don't know a lot about the fancier restaurants around here. We'd like to stay in the city if possible. Would love your thoughts. Thank you in advance!

The Dining Room at the Ritz Carlton with legendary chef Ron "I won Iron Chef in Japan" Siegel. Chez Panisse doesn't really have a tasting menu, nor do they do wine pairings, and it's a little more informal than a "beautiful fine dining experience." The Ritz will really feel luxurious and special.

Perhaps La Folie? I've always prefered La Folie over Fleur de Lys.

go down to Manresa -- not SF, but would be a memorable experience

Manresa is a good hour by car from SF, but is exceptional. It is truly something special.

Within the city proper, I'd recommend Michael Mina, in the Westin St. Francis Hotel. Its his flagship restaurant and is coolly elegant. The food delivers.
