Del Frescos Steak House - I went last Thursday

I took my friend from New York to Del Frescos to show her a good time. We entered and my friend thought that the place was an old train station ala 30th st. station,soaring ceilings, marble, iron work..It was a bank, boy what a bank! Anyway,we were greated by a bevy of cute young ladies trying very hard to act like they knew what they were doing. Even though I had a reservation I had to wait for 25min. and do alot of nagging to get a table. As we got to our table the comparisons of the hosteses dressed in skin tight black mini skirts and a meat market were not lost on me.... Is this still cool in 2009? Our waiter was great and the service once we sat down was top notch. Lets get to the meat of the matter- food. I ordered fried oysters,they were small little things, with the typical two sauses. The wedge which I always get as a test steak house salad had alot of blue cheese but not much dressing. I found it to be dry and uninspired. I ordered the bone-in strip steak, it was done perfectly and had a nice light rub on it. , it was steak heaven. I alway order creamed spinach ,what can I say Im a Philly girl. It had bacon in it which I didnt like at all,it took over the taste of the dish which can be very mild. The waiter raved about the lobster mac and cheese so we ordered it. The lobster was hardly detecable, teeny ,tiny bits in an just ok mac and cheese. I took home leftovers and my husband didnt even know that there was lobster in it ! The bread that they rave about on the web sight was nothing special at all, not worth the carbs. Well folks I guess its a fun place if you like a scene or to be seen. I myself can find steaks just as good and much better sides at other steak houses. I found that the expense account atmosphere aka.hostesses dressed like ladies of the night offensive . If the food was great ,hey I might overlook it ,but it wasnt.

  1. Thanks for the report. I find it difficult to believe Philly can support all these new steakhouses, particularly in light of first-hand accounts like yours.

    At least your steak was good!

    2. WOW!! Thanks for the "heads up"!! Not my kind of place, either..You just saved me from a potentially not excellent evening next week, also probably a few extra $$ !! I'm re-routing my reservation to Chops.It's always good and I like it there.

        Ewwww Del's is 100 times better than Chop's. If you do go to Chops try the wasabe mashed potatoes. They aren't even edible. FYI, It is called Del DRISCO's not Fresco's too. We're headed back tonight for the best lobster tail around.

          It's actually Del FRISCO's, not Drisco's.

          What makes it the best lobster tail?

          Seems odd to me to go out for lobster when they're $7.99/lb at many markets around town, but perhaps they're passing on the savings to you.

          But that's beside the point. How is it prepared? I

            Oops typo. I love everyone calling it Fresco's though. I just saw it called that in a magazine. I forget how its cooked but its the best of all the steakhouses. Its meaty like a steak. I'll check it out for you tonight. I don't look at prices when I go out but you can't get Aussie tails for $7.99/lb. Give it a try at least once.

            I'm sorry to hear of your dislike, we've been to CHOPS at least 50 times over the years. Have never had a problem, only great steak and friendly service. Didn't even realize that they offer wasabe mashed potatos,it's not something that we'd normally order. Try the lyonnaise potatos ot the spinach next time you go.

              I have had very good meals at Chops too . Try Capitol Grill and Flemmings ,you wont be dissapointed.

          4. The timing just seems wrong to me. Not only are individuals cutting back on big expensive meals -- companies are limiting expense accounts, too. Also, wasn't that "transforming an old, glorious bank into an awe-inspiring restaurant space" more of a 1980s/90s phenom? Are we really wowed by that stuff anymore?

            2. you ordered the wrong sides. The gnochi side they have is phenomenal, and the shrimp appetizer is a must

                At prices like those, there shouldn't be any such thing as the 'wrong sides'.

                  I ordered the sides that my server recommended . If I want fabulous gnochi Ill go to an Italian restaurant , some who make them as light as clouds....
