Where to buy tequila/mezcal in Yucatan
I will be travelling to the Yucatan in February and wondering if anyone has any advice as to where to stock up on some good tequila and/or mezcal.
We will be landing in Cancun airport, but staying in Tulum, Akumal, and Valedolid.
Also, if anyone has some favorites unavailable in US, that would be great.
Thanks!
There's a good thread on this topic already on the board, try a search.
In short, Yucatan in is Quintana Roo state, whereas Jalisco State is the tequila-making region of Mexico where you can get distillery tours and the like. That doesn't mean you won't find great tequila in Cancun, it's just kind of like looking for great California wine in Texas, you will have to know where to go.
Some may disagree, but I suggest you hit the duty free shop on your way home. The one in Cancun is pretty decent, if you are flying through Guadalajara, that one is better. A lot of variety and anything you see without an export stamp is probably not available in the US (or at least hard to find). Prices will be excellent compared to what you pay in the US. For example, I bought a bottle of Centenario Anejo in Mexico for $24 last year, here it sells in my local market for $59. Don't let them talk you into buying the weird tequila cream liquers or anything like that, just go for the high quality 100% agave artisanal stuff, you won't be sorry. Good luck, good trip.

The duty free is a great option in most airports if you know the brands pretty well. You can always find some gems, and high end bottles at a fantastic price.I bought a bottle of Herradura Selecion Suprema a few years back at the dufry in D.F for $160, it retails in the states for $350+.D.F. and GDL have great duty free and the airport in GDL has a shop that is amazing. You can check with them about getting the bottle on the plane, or go through security, buy,and put in your checked bag.A hassle, but I've suffered through more for a great bottle. The Centenario anejo is almost always available in dufry and that is a beautiful price.
Perhaps companies like Cofradia have a shop in Cancun for tasting in the tourist zone.Playa Del Carmen has a Cofradia shop that has about 30 different bottles of several labels from their distillery.
