foodies in Pittsburgh

Looking for some fun places in the Pittsburgh area to Any foodies out there got some ideas? Any loca lfood I shouldn't miss?Also a good watering hole idea would be good.

  1. How about providing us with some direction? Anywhere in Pgh, downtown, burbs? Are you interested in cheap local stuff, great local restaurants, etc? What kind of watering hole--beer or wine selection, atmosphere?

    1. If you like good beers (Belgian, imports, etc)...seek out one of the Sharp Edge establishments. They also have some tasty bar food.

      1. Someone's bound to throw it out there, so I might as well. Primanti's is the restuarant/sandwich most people think of when they think of Pittsburgh. There are several locations around the city and suburbs. Personally I don't care for the sandwiches, but a lot of people are super-passionate about them.
        I enjoy the Strip District, which is just outside downtown, on Saturday mornings. It's a mix of markets, restaurants, and local shops. I like breakfast at Pamela's there.
        I'm a fan of Tessaro's in Bloomfield for meat and potatoes meals. The grilled food is great.

        2. I'm an East Ender so my preferences tend to be around my neighborhood. Three regular places (in no particular order):

          Piccolo Forno, 38th and Butler, Lawrenceville/Arsenal. Great arugula salad, wood oven pizzas, pastas. BYOB. Get there early or prepare to wait. They'll take your cell phone number and call you when your table's ready. Ate there last night. People were still showing up at 9:15 (late I think for Pgh.)

          Green Mango/Noodle Hut, South Braddock Av in Regent Square, Great thai food. Lots of traditional recipes, good creative variations - fairly healthy versions. My favorite: Chicken Basil. Spicy, eggplant, onions, peppers, etc. My husband likes Queen Tilipia - ask for it steamed not fried - will take the roof off your mouth. Yum, yum, also BYOB.

          Point Brugge. Mussels and frites. and Belgian beers. Corner of Hastings and South Reynolds, Point Breeze. Another potentially long wait, but worth it. My favorite: the salad with asparagus and goat cheese. Small bowl of mussels.
          These are our regulars - at least once a month for each.

          1. What sort of food are you looking for? Living in the university area... we like Point Brugge Cafe (think moules frites and great belgian brews on tap) and Legume bistro (california/french) for delicious Euro/American food. Chaya for sushi. Dinette for delicious thin crust pizzas (we love the prosciutto, arugula and shaved parm). Silk Elephant and Bangkok Balcony (same owner) for Thai. La Prima is great for espresso...but I would avoid Pamelas... really low quality ingredients. Haven't been to DeLucca's. Instead of Primanti's, try Uncle Sam's Subs (cheesesteaks), which is what our out of town guests crave, as well as Aiello's pizza (next to Mineos) They use a higher quality flour for their dough and better cheese. Sharp Edge has a good selection of beers, but the food is bad (at least in the city). D's Six Pax has a lot of beer selections and better food, just not as much on tap.

              I wouldn't avoid Pamela's, I along with throngs of others love their crepe style pancakes for breakfast as well as the lyonnaise potatoes. La Prima is good, but I pfefer 21st Street Coffee, the best I've had in the city.

                While I usually agree w/ you...

                I don't object to their style of pancakes....I love crepes and crepe-style pancakes... I just object to the artificial margerine/butter-flavored OIL they use for cooking said pancakes and potatoes. If they used real butter I might like Pamela's better. IMnotsoHO, pancakes should be cooked in butter:) My husband and I, along with many friends and co-workers feel that Pamela's makes us ill...and I certainly don't want visitors to think that Pamela's is the best representation of Pittsburgh's breakfast scene. Point Brugge's brunch is on a completely different level, using quality ingredients and won't make you sick. And who cares what "throngs of Pittsburghers like"....when they vote Vocelli's as best pizza in the city- blech! If someone is really a "foodie", and not just someone visiting for a Pirates/Penguins/Steelers game, then let's put Pittsburgh's best foot/food forward:)

                  QSheba, you're 100% right, Pamela's isn't really a foodie place, for that Point Brugge would be an excellent choice. Pamela's will definitely leave you a little sick feeling if you eat too much, I usually just stick to a short stack and share a side of potatoes, great junk food to me! Very, very valid point about the Vocelli thing!

                    On the other hand, "someone visiting for a Pirates/Penguins/Steelers game" might also very much appreciate a pointer in the right direction for enjoyable food after the excitement. Most people are not so one dimensional that they can't enjoy more than one pleasant activity.

                      Anyone tried the Dorstop for pancakes? Or Coco Cafe for brunch?

                        Have been wanting to try Dorstop and if I do soon I'll post back. Coco Cafe is good, certainly worth trying.

                          I've been to the Dorstop. It's good, but I prefer Pamela's. You really can't go wrong either way.

                            I agree. both have excellent pancakes, but they are totally different styles. The Dorstop has thick, full figured great tasting cakes, while Pamela's are thin, with crispy edges. Both are very good!

                            Not to get off topic, but the Dorstop was featured in an episode of Diners, Drive -Ins and Dives. The place looked like a lot of fun and the food that was prepared for the show -pancakes plus some other stuff- looked really appetizing.

                          Given the OP's current drink of choice is Bud, the beer discussion might be moot. However, just wanted to say IMO the difference between Fathead's and Sharp Edge is the former is a bar/sandwich place that happens to have a great selection of beers. The latter is a beer emporium staffed with knowledgeable experts that happens to serve food.

                          But as far as best watering hole, it's Gooskis. You can get a very microbrew or a Coors Lite if so inclined. Best jukebox in town. It's ratty and the patrons are a blessed mix spanning generations, incomes and everything else. A Pittsburgh melting pot. With Polish food to boot.

                            Disagree about Fathead's. To claim it merely has a lot of beer and a staff lacking beer knowledge is not accurate at all. It might not have the atmosphere of Gooskis but its done a lot to improve the selection of beer available in the city. For just having a part in getting Bear Republic available here we owe the manager much thanks as they make one of the best IPAs in the country. And the quality of what's usually on their taps is high, my only complaint is they don't always have an East End beer on.

                              I imagine if you're being served by the manager, you could well be right on the knowledge bit. But if you're being served by the regular staff, it's not even close, IMO. I've had enough beers at both Fatheads and Sharp Edge Creekhouse to know. Guess I haven't been lucky enough to be served by the manager.

                                We'll have to agree to disagree. I've found more than one bartender at Fathead's with a good knowledge of beer. Plus imo the original Sharp Edge location is very good, the others fall off a bit.
