Walnut bread in or near Berkeley

Glencora Jan 14, 2009 08:10 PM

It's for croutons for mushroom soup. I didn't see any at Acme today. Any other ideas? Thanks.

At opening there are occasionally day old wheat walnuts at Acme Berkeley, $1.90. This loaf keeps for days making good toast.

Great tip. I see from their website that they open at 6:20 (oddly specific). My SO is usually coming home from work around then. Toot Sweet also has day olds, but Acme is better.

I don't believe the web site. When I got there at 8AM on my way to work they opened at 8:00. There was sometimes a short line waiting for the door to be opened.

The walnut levain at Acme disappears fast but is made every day.

Semifreddis also makes one, and both theirs and Acme's are sold at many other stores besides their own retail outlets (Andronico's, Berkeley Bowl, Whole Foods, etc.) You should have no problem finding one at one of those places.

You can call Semifreddis on Claremont or their other stores to see if they have it in stock or to order it. It can help with the running around.

Thanks everyone. I was probably just trying too late in the day.

Actually a modification of the No-Knead Bread recipe produces a very good whole wheat walnut bread. One bowl, one day, one pot.
