White Dog Closed for good

Mawrter Jan 14, 2009 07:00 PM

The end of an era, really. Does anyone know what was going on with them? What will happen to the space? What Judy Wicks is doing next?

Where did you hear/read/see this? I read on Michael Klein's blog that they were closing temporarily for some equipment upgrades, and some of the staff (including the chef) had been let go, but that it would reopen soon:

Not that I am a fan of the place but I even heard they were thinking of opening a second location outside of the city...

Reported by Michael Klein in today's Philadelphia Inquirer, the restaurant is closed, and Andy Brown and staff fired. They are cleaning and refitting the kitchen, and are supposed to open as early as

I also heard about the second site, which I think was supposed to be somehwere over on the Mainline.

I ate at White Dog last December. The food was good not great though I thought their desserts were quite good. Service was slow as usual, but not painfully so.

yes, i thought i heard about a second location opening in wayne? and they'd just hired a new manager to let judy wicks focus more on community efforts, or something to that effect?

this change of power seems like it was done a little ungraciously, but the food there has been crap for a few years, so maybe the change is completed warranted. there was an article in the inky a few weeks ago mentioning that judith wicks was going to focus more on her food charity's work.

why did you think that is was closed for good?

The food was indeed terrible. Fingers crossed that they come back with something inventive, or barring that, just plain good to eat. White Dog had become relegated to "the place I'll have a pint while my fiance shops at the Black Cat."

True, the food really became terrible. I remember years and years ago what it used to be. I went when they had Alice Waters as a guest chef. Amazing.

New menus are up and they will reopen very soon, possibly even friday.

And second location is still planned for Wayne.

I guess the question about Wicks is still valid.

Oops, hello, NOT closed for good, as it turns out. As all of you realized. Sorry! I'd heard partial info (staff let go, food donated, etc.) and drew the wrong conclusion. Thanks for the links to the articles. Agree that the food has been lousy there for the last while, and look forward to improvement .

Looks good in theory. We'll see about the execution.
