Help in Bakersfield
We are taking our son's club soccer team to Bakersfield for a tournament at the end of January. Need a place that is good for large parties with reasonably good food and serves alcohol ( for the parents of course).
I suggest Wool Growers in Bakersfield, they have excellent Basque-American food that both kids and adults like, not to mention booze.
They can accomodate large groups, and the food is also meant to be shared.
After your order is taken, they bring out bread, soup and beans, which is then followed up by salad.
Next the entrees come, which usually come with some other side dish depending on the night. Sometimes its mushy spaghetti, other times it is ox tail or lamb stew.
The Oxtails are to die for.
For entrees, they have chicken, steaks, fish and chops.
My kids really like the roast tri-tip.
I usually get the lamb chops which are the best around.
Also, the french fries they serve with the entrees are the best I've ever had, and I've eaten them all over the place.
For dessert try their Spumoni.

i grew up there . . . although, i rarely admit it. i also played soccer and spent many hours at the kern county soccer park. correct me if i'm wrong, but aren't you looking for carbs? try frugattis . . . cheap, easy, serves drinks and is pretty casual. where are you guys staying though? bakersfield is really spread out and if you're playing at the kern county soccer park, it's out in the middle of nowhere. . . and far away from everything else. i could probably give you more recommendations more local to your hotel knowing the area. wool growers is awesome and i always make a trip there when i head home, but may not please all the boys that didn't grow up with that style of food.
If you're looking for something casual and affordable, I recommend a place called Sarducci's Italian Deli. It's a sandwich place and there are other items like lasagna, spaghetti...etc. They have a pretty good variety of beers, and there's enough room for a larger group. I think a sandwich, soup AND fry plate runs about $5-$6 if I recall correctly... I personally like their salami sandwich, and I hear their pickled tongue is the best in town.
