theater district dining w/ 20 people, incl. kids

I have a group of about 20 coming to see Shrek later in the month. Several are children. I am looking for a place to bring the whole crowd. Criteria: must have cocktails or wine for the adults; menu must have some kid friendly choices (even pasta ok); must take reservations; and be able to handle a small room or area for 20 or so people. This would be 5 pm, post-matinee on a Saturday. Thanks everyone! anyone seen the show, by the way???

  1. John's Pizza is perfect for you. I think it's on 42nd and 10th or thereabouts....

I'd agree with John's except I don't think they take reservations. Maybe for such a large group they will. They are located on 44th between broadway and 8th.

They will take a reservation for a party of that size, and depending on availability, may seat you upstairs, which is nice and spacious!

    2. Trattoria Trecolori, on 47th St., b/t B'way & 8th Av., serves very good homestyle Italian fare. It's an attractive, spacious restaurant which can easily handle a group your size. They'd probably seat you in the rear section though you can also ask about their private room upstairs.

      1. I really really really hate to recommend this place since I consider myself a foodie and don't want pies thrown at me, but if you have such a large group with kids, you might want to consider Mars 2112. In fact, it might even be apt prior to seeing a show like Shrek.

Now before everyone starts bashing, I went a few months ago with a group, including kids, and we had a good time. I mean, we weren't there for the ambiance, as were the kids, but the food was actually pretty decent, if not totally overpriced, which is not surprising. The kids had a blast. I had the spaghetti squash with roasted vegetables in a tomato sauce and liked it so much I've been trying to reproduce it in my own kitchen.

If you're not into kitsch.... I know Ruth's Chris has a private room upstairs for large groups.

If John's does take reservations for that many, I highly recommend it as well. However, note that it is on 44th street and Shrek is on 53rd, so it is a bit of a walk between, if that is a concern for any in your party.

        1. I really like Roberto Passon on 9th Ave and I think 51st. Consistently good food, good prices, and a very laid back, neighborhoody feel that's totally kid-appropriate. I don't think they have a separate room, but otherwise, I think they meet all of your needs.

          1. Mars 2112 was the worst food experience we ever had in NY. Stay away.
