Dining and food shopping at Deep Creek Lake?
Not sure the best place to post this request.
We're staying at a rental house at Deep Creek Lake for Valentine's/President's Day weekend. Never been there before. We'll probably cook breakfast at the house and go out for dinner. One catch is that our friends have a new baby (7 months old). What are some good restaurants nearby. No budget (other than they have to allow the baby in) but one of our friends is really picky and she doesn't touch seafood. None of us are looking to celebrate Valentine's so romantic is not a necessity but good food and wine would be nice.
And if this isn't the right place for this post, please move it.

My mom is in that area, so I know a little bit about it. On the way there, I suggest the Casselman Inn for a quick lunch. I believe you get some breakfast rolls and breads from their bakery. Skip the Penn Alps restaurant, but do visit the gift shops and crafts village. You can get stone ground buckwheat from Penn Alps to make your own buckwheat cakes one morning.
If you need to stock the kitchen, there's suppose to be a German butcher and a speciality grocery store in Accident, and if you go, please report back! Actually, if anyone ever goes, please tell me if it's worth dragging my mom too next time I go up. When we tried to stop by after Christmas, they were closed. The owner does not open on Saturday on religious grounds, so Friday would probably be the best day to visit.

Unfortunately there is not a lot there. Here are my suggestions though you may search the mid-atlantic boards as I have posted some suggestions there for a few people:
Nice dinner out- your best bet is Pine Lodge, not anything close to the good food you have here in DC, but it is ok. In Oakland The Cornish Manor is pretty good too, may be better than Pine Lodge and much cuter.
Hole in the wall breakfast place in Oakland open Sunday only until noon and open other days for breakfast and lunch- Englander's. It was an old pharmacy with a soda fountain, the pharmacy closed and it has antiques in the front now. They only give newbies menus, you might see some farmers, locals refill their own coffee and give and get lip from the help. The food is greasy, but the buckwheat pancakes and sausage are great. Homefries are good too.
I would suggest if you want some kind of prepared food to go to Arrowhead market. They have good rotisserie chicken (better than our supermarket ones down here, not as good as like a peruvian chicken joint) the mac and cheese is good, so are the potato wedges, really most of the prepared food is good, they also have decent steaks to grill and other groceries.
Pick up some pepperoni rolls, they are a Western MD/WV specialty that you don't find many other places, arrowhead's aren't the best, but they are good, and I don't know anywhere around the lake that has better.
If you can make it to Amish country Saturday there is a place called Sugar and Spice bakery of 219 south that has great amish pastries and breads, the bread, real butter, doughnuts, pumpkin rolls, snitz pies and rolls are great, well worth the short drive from Oakland, and you might see a buggy or two on your way out and back.
At the lake Brenda's Pizzeria is ok too.
Also if you are touring around and head near Davis, WV Sierriani's in Davis has great Italian food and pizza, I mean really good and the atmosphere is classic.
Canoe on the Run is good for lunch for homemade soups, sandwiches, salads and lighter lunch. There is a BBQ place that isn't too bad if you like Memphis BBQ, I don't think it is the best, but at least they smoke it unlike Red Hot & Blue.
Don't go to Santa Fe Grill...

re: ktmoomau
Great run down ktmoomau! I could not have said and listed better and I live here in Oakland!
Here's the website for Brenda's www.brendaspizzeria.com which has her menu. I am very partial to her place. From her pizza to appetizers to entrees-all good!
The BBQ place is Archies-Ribs are esp good-very smokey and wings are also good. (Not so excited about their brisket
)And I agree with well worth it to find Sugar And Spice on Sat am.
If you end up at Englanders-may want to try a local favorite of buckwheat pancakes!
ANd make sure you pack warm clothes-enjoy!-
re: dklipscomb
BTW dklipscomb, the little mexican place, that is where Boardwalk was, is pretty good. I was pretty impressed I have had a couple really good things there. For Oakland it is great, I hope it can survive being in that location, it seems to be a location of death. It is kind of nice to have it there as a change of pace food-wise.
I thought about also recommending Get N Go chicken salad, but I don't know if a city-person would be as addicted to it, I am just I grew up with it, but...

re: ktmoomau
Thanks-will have to check the mexican place out-thought it had closed down already-but not sure on that. WE are on same wave length on foods-I crave the chicken salad from get -n-go! And Cornish for lunch and that warm chicken salad in bread bowl-deadly!! Thought about relaying Arrowhead cinnamon rolls!
We are into brutal temps and some snow here-guess you aren't missing that!!

re: Ericandblueboy
Well if the crowds at Wisp look hellacious and you head to Timberline or Canaan Valley you will drive through Davis. As a note, Blackwater Falls in Davis has a sledding hill (I believe it is natural snow though so you would have to call for conditions they may have a couple snow blowers) for which they have a tow and rent toboggans. It is great fun a little more reminiscent of the sledding you did as a kid and a lot less crowded. They also normally have a fire outside to warm up at and hot chocolate. Just in case, since Wisp hasn't had a lot of great skiing weekends, it could get really crowded and the areas in WV aren't a bad drive.
I second Bright Morning Cafe as a stop on the way if you would end up heading that way. I haven't been to Whitegrass, but my Dad has really liked it said it was one of the best places to eat around that area. Although if I am in the area, no matter what other choices are available I always go for Sirrianis.

re: ktmoomau
I second Sirrianis. Also in Davis is Bright Morning Cafe -- excellent breakfast. Just outside of Davis is Whitegrass, which has both XC skiing and great food for lunch and dinner. Menu is online at www.whitegrass.com.
