I think it's what you get used to drinking. I love Leinie's. Trois Pistoles it ain't, but it's good beer and easy to drink. I grew up on Yuengling (I'm from New Jersey) and moved to the Upper Midwest for college and the start of my adult life.
Also realise that the default beer in the towns I lived in in the Midwest was "Primo" -- AKA Grain Belt Premium, at the princely sum of 50 cents a bottle, ten to fifteen years ago. When you're used to that ("How is Primo like sex in a boat?" "Both are f---ing close to water.")
As far as Yuengling, John's Philly Grill used to carry it -- get it shipped in since California doesn't have terribly stupid beer-shipping laws the way other states (*COUGH*Massachusetts*COUGH) do. The one near me in Anaheim is long gone but there may be others.
