  1. You might want to try Zankou Chicken, it is on Colorado blvd just west of the PCC. Great grilled chicken, killer garlic sauce and I also like the falafel...it's good and cheap!

    1. Here are several places you might try along Colorado Blvd., a little east of PCC. All would fit your requirements:

Maasa, Japanese food; Sahara, Mideastern food; La Grotta di Capri; Argentinian-Italian food; Carribean Treasure, Carribean-California fusion.

      1. Good & Cheap:

Malaysian: Kuala Lumpur on Green St, West of Fair Oaks
Burgers: Wolf Burger-- Lake Street, North of Colorado
Breakfast: Pie N' Burger, corner of California & Lake.
        Bakery: Europane--Colorado, east of Lake

        Hope that helps!

I'll second the recommendation for Zankou Chicken, also.

Wolfe Burger has been great for a long time. Presume it hasn't changed. Pie and Burger has the best tasting burgers anywhere but they're not cheap. FatBurger is at least 2 bucks less. Burger Continental has an extensive menu with a mid-eastern flavor.

        2. For Middle Eastern in Pasadena, I like the delicious chicken shawarma and always-fresh sides at Mediterranean Café. Small and close to PCC, just off South Lake. Great for a satisfying, inexpensive lunch.

          1. Just passed by my favorite Pasadena taco shack, Las Ruinas. Or I should say, what was my favorite Pasadena taco shack. Apparently even the praise of Mr. J Gold could not save it, and already it sits at Chester and Green, graffitied and forlorn. Shame on Pasadena, on the city college students, and on us all. You will be missed.

            1. re: Spoony Bard

              I ate there on Saturday.........
              No graffitti then......
Are you saying it's closed down now?

              1. re: Spoony Bard

I ate there Friday, and saw no sign of closure. And may I add that I think this place has allready earned a spot as one of LA's great taco stands. Excellent Pastor to be had here, and the mushroom tacos are good too.

                1. re: chris o

Hounds, I hope I'm wrong. Passed by yesterday (a Sunday), so they would be closed for the day. The graffiti then could have been there regardless, and just misled me. Hope I jumped to conclusions as I sped towards lunch! For one of LA's great taco stands, however, it always seems sorely under-utilized when I'm there. Three people at once is a crowd.

Ended up having a great cheap lunch at Fu Shing, which is worth mentioning as a good, generally inexpensive Pasadena place for lunch, though it is waaaaay down on Colorado. For $5.90 including tax I got peppery hot and sour soup, chinese chicken salad, rice, and a fragrant, garlicy ma po tofu, with silky delicate chunks of tofu. Very refined Sichuan, and though my nose began to run at the end it could have been even spicier (next time). Will have to try their more innovative Sichuan-meets-Cantonese-seafood next.

Next time I'll read down to the bottom of the post before panicking. Whew.

                2. re: Spoony Bard

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Las Ruinas was truly great. Just as we were making it a weekly habit. Very sad.

                3. Try this new place , for mediterranean food called Soumarelo, it is sooo much better than Zankou and their prices are great like a whole rotis. chix, garlic paste, pitas, delicious rice and hummus (for an extra 2 bucks) for $6.99. its on Allen , north of orange grove but b4 you get to Washington.

El Azteca Huarache the best food and sooo cheap..try the huaraches for 2 bucks, on York blvd. in higland park which is next to S. Pasadena.... My friend ordered carne asada plate, huge steak , rice, beans ,salad for only 5$

                  1. Right down the street from PCC, on Colorado Blvd. next to the 99 Cent Store just west of Hill Street, is a British pub that serves great fish and chips. They often have some kind of dinner deal too!

                    1. re: Reeter1

                      Hi,

They're called Brit's and I agree, best fish & chips around!

                      1. re: Michelle

They also have a very good happy hour deal on their hamburger, 8oz angus, for $3.00.

                    2. If you dig Thai, Saladang is fantastic!

                      1. re: peztastic

not cheap tho, to say the least...but worth it!

                      2. 3 cheers for Fu Shing and that spicy beef soup!!!

                        1. You're probably staying at one of the hotels next to my restaurant. But, I would suggest Zancou, it's chicken done a little different with unusual sides (unless you're mid eastern). It's inexpensive and unique. West of the CHevron.
