Frankie & Gianni's In Old Saybrook , Ct
Well - after the movies Sunday late afternoon - we decided to try out F&G's based on an article I saw in the local paper.
It was kind of quiet - but it was an off hour ....
their menu is on blackboards and is largely soup, sandwiches, salads and panini's.
They also had a breakfast board menu up as well - not sure if I could have ordered off it - but I stuck with the Lunch Board....
Anyway - we ordered the soup of the day which was Minestrone and a baguette , and a featured panini - proscuitto, fontina, and marinated artichokes
The soup was hearty and full of flavor and came out HOT !
The panini was delicious - crusty bread, salty proscuitto, creamy fontina and the nice twang of the artichokes -
The server mentioned their hours are 7-7 - so if you are looking for a late lunch or lite early dinner - - good place to put on your list !
Oh yeah - they do have beer and wine offered as well !
and the coffee was perfect.
We went for lunch today. I've been wanting to try it since the Courant's article and your reviews. Two very tasty paninis--I had the turkey, bacon & cheddar on sourdough; he had the salmon (cooked) with herbed goat cheese and capers on country white. We both really enjoyed our sandwiches. Oh, and they serve Foxon Park sodas--nice touch.
My wife and I went there for lunch yesterday (Tuesday, 1/13/09) and found it thoroughly enjoyable. She had a cup of the minestrone soup and thought it was delicious. The diner next to us had a bowl of the soup and my wife was glad she settled for a cup. The cup was ample. She couldn't have finished the bowl. I had the BLT panini on sourdough. She had the grilled cheese with bacon and caramelized onions on sourdough. Both were excellent . I agree that the coffee was great and it kept coming. Service was pleasant and timely. A wide selection of sandwiches and an extensive and interesting breakfast menu. They serve off the breakfast menu until 11:30 AM. We'll go back and bring friends.
