Looking for Tuna Steak Sandwich

thirstypig Jan 12, 2009 06:31 PM

I was wondering if anyone knew of a place in Southern California that makes a Tuna Steak Sandwich or Ahi Tuna.

I once had a great Tuna Steak Sandwich in Hong Kong a few years ago. . . You could say that I've had a bit of a craving.

Beacon has an "seared albacore BLT" with Nueske bacon that's fairly tasty.

I like the one at Tender Greens, simple but tasty!

I really love the Seared Ahi Tuna Burgers at both locations of:
Home Restaurant in Los Feliz & Silver Lake

Lot 1 in Echo Park also has a pretty good one although I can't remember what kind of Tuna it was (not Ahi) and it was cooked thoroughly and not seared

My mom had one at Pete's Cafe downtown on Sunday. I didn't try it, but she was very happy with it.

i think theirs is more of a tuna "burger" than a tuna "steak" sandwich. i mention this because i happened to ask someone this question yesterday.

i'm confused--isn't a burger a sandwich? Or is the meat chopped?

The meat is chopped and formed into a patty, much like a regular hamburger patty.

The burger was pretty good. I liked the pickled onions it came with.

I love the Ahi burger at Bluebird Cafe in Culver City, so if you don't mind a brioche bun instead of two slices of bread, it's a good option. I believe it's currently on their daily special (about $11 for the burger, fries, side salad, and a cupcake).

edit: Even though it's called a burger, it doesn't come with the usual burger fixings. There's some sort of pineapple salsa that comes with it.

I wrote about it (including the ahi burger) here: http://culvercitybeat.com/articles/20...

Try Central Park. You can get it with avocado if you want (and I do).

Although I personally prefer their burger with smoked short rib in it, Beachwood BBQ does a good Ahi Tuna Sandwich. They also have an excellent selection of craft beers on tap!

Yes. I really like this sandwich. I think it's only offered during lunch hours.

Could you explain what the sandwich is like? The name is pretty ambiguous. I do know of a place that serves a mean seared ahi tuna sandwich. Mo's in Burbank does a great version for lunch...seared ahi tuna with carmelized onions, a garlic and caper aioli, tomatoes, and lettuce on grilled sourdough.

Another good seared ahi sandwich is at The Library Alehouse in Santa Monica on main street.
                              Great beers too.

+1 on the Library Alehouse's ahi. My SO orders it every time and if I could ever tear myself from the turkeyburger, I'd get it too.
