Raleigh-Myrtle Beach Roadtrip

Hey fellow CHers. I will be taking a short roadtrip with friends in April, renting a car in Raleigh-Durham and driving to Myrtle Beach. I would love any must-try places along the way. Looking for BBQ or anything else that some New Englanders must try along the road to MB. Thanks in advance!

Its only about a 3 or 4 hour drive from Raleigh to MB, so I don't know that you're going to have the opportunity to eat a lot of meals in route. Fullers is a good call, as is stopping in Wilmington or Southport. Try doing a search on here for Wilmington, Wrightsville Beach and/or Southport and you will find lots of suggestions. Or, if you want something closer to Raleigh, try doing a search for that.

If you are going to travel 40 to Wilmington and then 17 to Myrtle Beach, you can stop at Meadow Restaurant in Meadow, NC exit 334. Country buffet and to go cakes and pies. Also you could stop in Calabash NC which is very close to Myrtle Beach and try the Calabash fried seafood, Ella's gets the nod in Calabash. If you go 40 to 95 Fullers might be your best bet, however I would never go through Florence if traveling from RDU to MB, that would be at lease an hour or more out of the way.

Another option if you take the 95S to 74 route is to go slightly off the route and stop in Whiteville. Ward's grill in downtown Whiteville makes a very good burger. Best to get there early because they shut it down when they run out of meat for the day.

You could get a quick and good barbeque sandwich with slaw from Smithfield's. Wilmington has a very beautiful historic waterfront district. The homes and buildings are quintessentially Southern. The old moss covered oaks and Palmettos make the downtown area so unique. There are many good restaurants all along Water Street. If you have children with you I would encourage a visit to the Battleship too.
Southport is a very old and historic town but you may have to go out of your way to see it and I think it may require a ferry ride so you would have to time your drive just right. I might be wrong about that ferry, it has been a while since I was there. I remember Calabash on that long route too, which is a shabby stop dedicated to local seafood.

          Calabash might be shabby chic

but if you are there in April

stop at Ellas for the Oyster Roast.....

drooling just thinking about it !!!

Fuller's BBQ is right on I-95. Probably not the best example of any one food, but the buffet is a great sampling of everything Southern (barbeque, catfish, fried chicken, greens, homemade pies, etc.). The first time I tried to stop there, the road was completely congested with cars parked at every angle in any wide spot for 1/4 mile in either direction. I thought it was a huge accident, but it was just the Fuller's after-church Sunday lunch crowd. I went back another time and l understood why (good, friendly, and cheap).

coolhandluke, Roger's in Florence is a local favorite for barbeque, fried chicken and southern sides. It is not far off I-95. I understand Roger's is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays however.
