Which cooktop material is best?

What are the pros and cons of porcelain/ceramic, stainless steel, glass, etc.?

I need to buy a new range (gas, convection) and need something with a cooktop that is easy to clean but is hard to destroy (scratch, chip, etc.). That is, something that can take a lot of abuse.

    1. We have a Jenn-Air gas stove with removable cast iron grates that cover the burners, and I love it. We have had a few issues with the stove, but the Jenn-Air service people have been great to us.

      It is nice to be able to remove the grates, clean underneath, then easily replace them. I haven't had any other type of gas range as a point-of-reference, but I have been happy with the removable grates.
