Also, you should carefully look at the site rules for posting on this board since you will be opening your own, (so far unnamed) place in Westwood. The site does not allow restaurant owners or others with an interest in a restaurant to use the site as a PR resource.

That's okay, if his food is lousy we'll kick his ass (in a rhetorical sense, of course).

If another branch of Phillip's or Woody's opened up thataway's I guess I'd be happy, so those are my suggestions on where he should go do some snooping.

Woody's on Slauson (south side of street) just west of Crenshaw, Phillip's on Centinela just before La Cienega (also south side). Both have another outlet or two.

We LOVE the Outdoor Grill, in Culver City, right at the the junction of the two Washingtons (where Gooey Louie's used to be). It has less than no atmosphere,as it sits adjacent to the Lazy J Car Wash (which is VERY BUSY) but the meat(chicken, beef and pork ribs, and tri-tip, along with many sides) is all cooked on an outdoor mesquite wood grill and the sauce is fantastic. Though not as spicy as some might like, we love it.

You'll probably get a million answers to your question - everyone seems to have different taste when it comes to barbecue (for example, I think the ribs from Smokin' Mo's, which placed near the top of the "taste off" are very weak - cooked with gas, etc.). Why don't you go on a tour of Texas instead: try Louie Mueller's in Taylor for ribs and brisket; the various sausage places in Elgin; the meat market-style 'cue in Lockhart, Luling, etc.; and Drexler's in Houston and Ruthie's in Navasota for East Texas-style 'cue - which is the style all the Crenshaw places seem to imitate. Go to Memphis and try Interstate Bar-B-Que's pulled pork and ribs. Go to North Carolina and try the pulled pork there. Then use those places to raise the bar for the standards you are trying to achieve. The trip and meals are tax write-offs, so why not?

My other advice, install a real pit (if the city will let you) or at least one of these babies in your establishment and please don't use one of those infernal gas oven/smoker contraptions.

Bravo. If you're going to road trip (highly suggested) the Memphis in May BBQ world championships is coming up May 13-15, 2004. It might be a good one-stop sample many worthy barbecue cooks. Was there several years ago, and it continues to be a huge event.

Not sure if your question was rhetorical...but the alleged "best" place to stay in Memphis is The Peabody. That's the hotel where some ducks are escorted to the roof pool in the morning and back to the lobby fountain in the evening via red carpet - with full-on gold-braided uniformed escort, trumpets, people hanging over the balcony with Instamatics, etc. I have witnessed this bizarre-in-the-extreme ceremony. OTOH, I did have some pretty decent grouper at a restaurant at the hotel which is about the best thing I could say about the trip and Memphis in general. Sadly, the boss wasn't into 'cue. (Yeah, I know this isn't LA-chow-centric, sorry for the digression.)
