Shang - Review

Went to Shang last night around 9 pm with 3 other girls. They seated us right away in a full room, but service was a bit slow in getting menus and our first drinks. After that blip, service was great and we had a fantastic evening. We had cocktails - I had a YenYen which I really enjoyed - vodka, cucumber, and lime. Very nice and refreshing.

We ordered the octopus on the recommendation of the waiter and that was the star of the meal - thinly sliced, tender octopus with slices of tomato and a phenomenal olive oil. Later (we closed the place down) Susur Lee came by our table and chatted with us and asked about the olive oil and he said it was pressed in-house.

We also had a very nice peanutty Asian slaw which was a large portion and we all really liked. We were less thrilled with the vegetarian dumplings (just OK), but we liked the snapper, which was light and quite tasty. Our second favorite dish was the duck spring rolls with foie gras - a very tender peice of foie on top of the roll (which maybe had a little bit too much hoisin for me) but was a delicious roll.

The desserts were not very good - I wouldn't recommend dessert here. We had the hazlenut chocolate cake and the chocolate pineapple and banana. We didn't care for either, which is something notable for a group of 4 tipsy women!

We had a lot to drink and were all very full when we left, and it came out to about $400 for the meal, which isn't unreasonable. The room is beautiful and the crowd was fun to watch as well!
