Recommendation near Brookdale Community College?

I'm going to a an event there next weekend, and looking for a good but casual place to take my parents. Close to campus and easy to find is important, as we're not from the area. Any recommendations?

  1. If you like Asian there is Saigon II Vietnamese and Manow Astian Bistro which is mainly Thai, both off the main drag in Lincroft, just a couple miles from the school.

    1. You can head east for not quite 3.5 miles to San Remo in Shrewsbury. It's a BYO Italian that's right on Rt 520/Newman Springs Road, the road that Brookdale is on. Liquor store is across the street.

Another option is CJ Montanas. Head east on 520 for not quite 3 miles and turn right onto Shrewsbury Avenue. It's half a mile ahead on your right.

      1. I second equal_Mark's suggestion of Manow Asian Bistro. We've stuck with the Thai dishes on the menu, and all have been very good.

Unfortunately, I can't say the same for Saigon II. We had one experience there, albeit quite some time ago, and the food was awful.

For Italian, I recommend SamVera, a couple of miles west of Brookdale, on Route 520, in Marlboro. Very good food and attractive ambiance. They have a liquor license.

Btw, avoid the Lincroft Inn. In a word: mediocre.

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience at Saigon II. We have had nothing but good meals there for several years. The place is always full, often with a sizable contingent of Asian customers.

We can't go there without an order of the Vietnamese Egg Rolls...

It was late in the evening, and we were the only ones eating at Saigon II, so that could have had something to do with how poor the food was. Not that that should be any excuse. The two times we've been to Manow, it's been at a fairly late hour -- near 9 p.m. -- we were the only ones dining, and the food was delicious.

I generally adhere to the maxim that a restaurant has only one chance to make a first impression, and even Mr. R., who is a bit less critical than I am, thought the food at Saigon II was not just so-so but awful. So, even if I were to change my mind and give it a second chance (rather unlikely), I'm not sure I could convince him to do so.

        2. If you want really casual, Luigi's in Lincroft, next to Saigon II, has food better than your run of the mill pizzaria. BTW, we enjoy Saigon II. About a mile south down Swimming River Road is The Falls, which has received excellent reviews on this board. Charley Brown's is across the street from The Falls, if you want something like that. (Swimming River is at the light in Lincroft.)

            how about the new Falls?

            1. re: Papa Bing

That's the one I mentioned. I haven't been there yet, though.

Also, Angelina mentioned The Pour House, another great choice. Go east from exit 109 and turn right at the light with three gas stations.

Or go another mile down Shrewsbury Ave to Kanji.

Obviously lots of fine choices nearby.

Depending on what time and day the event is, The Falls only serves lunch on Sunday (At least those were the hours listed in the now MIA website).

Red Bank is no further than some of the choices given here, and provides a couple dozen more possibilities. Go to this listing and click on the "Location" heading to sort by town:

            2. The Pour House is great for casual, burgers, steaks, etc.
