I've gotten the frozen tails from Harris Teeter (usually located by the seafood counter) and found them to be very flavorful - every bit as good as what I got in New Orleans. I make etouffee at home several times a year, and so far I've been very pleased with the results - more so than any restaurant here at which I've tried this dish.
I've also had good luck with other things from www.cajungrocer.com - I know they sell live crawfish, though I've not ordered any myself. If you can't find any live here, give 'em a try.

re: romansperson
My dad suggested cajungrocer too (also delighted in pointing out the football-shaped/Superbowl-themed turducken they are currently carrying). After I wrote, I discovered that Whole Foods also carries them frozen, and that's what I went with. (I also discovered that crawfish etouffee is easy and delicious!)
Good to know about the local live source tho...maybe I should throw a party this summer...

re: dbird
I asked him about crawfish sometime last year and he just doesn't like dealing with them.
Capital Seafood across from the Farmers Market usually has a steady supply of live ones when they are in season but they buy from a NC crawfish farm so the season starts a bit later that Louisiana crawfish. I have seen ones from LA at Earp's in Raleigh a few times but not in awhile and quality was inconsistant.

I have gotten live crawfish at Grand Asia Oriental store at South Hills mall in Cary, by the Walnut street, Buck Jones rd interchange. I have not been there in a few months, but we are coming into season for them.
