Good pastry / cakes within striking distance of NDG
Dear MTL Hounds,
It's going to be my b-day this month and, because of this Capricornian aspect, I cannot order a Cocoa Locale cake for my anniversary :sob:
Carswell suggests Fous Desserts and Délices du Plateau... I confess it's a smidge far to go pick up a cake on what is always a frantic day of preparations in this household (my birthday is basically just an excuse to throw a good party). But maybe they are worth it?
I've been rather disappointed by the cakes we've ordered from Pâtisserie de Nancy on Monkland two years ago (it was a terrible chocolate cake with a ridiculous amount of icing, suited to a 12 year old girl!). Last year, we had a fruity and chantilly confection from Pâtisserie de la gare (I think) on Westminster. It was... okay. (An amusing typo on the icing wished me Happy Brithday)
Perhaps the husband did not order their better cakes, I don't know.
So, is there a superior pâtisserie / cake baker in NDG or should we indeed range further afield? And what would be the best thing to order from them?
Let me eat cake,
Snowpea
I know a pastry chef who will make you a fabulous cake for a reasonable price, and deliver it to you. He made some for birthdays that both my hubby & I had this year - one a chocolate-strawberry cake, and another was a chocolate-hazelnut extravaganza. He also made my friend's incredible wedding cake this summer, after she tasted the cake at my hubby's b-day party. If you want his coordinates, let me know how I can contact you off-list, as I'm not comfortable posting his no. publicly.

Ooooooo that sounds like a fabulous idea. And with delivery, it would surely reduce the stress levels.

Hey snowpea,
One of my old girlfriends' parents would always pick up stuff fom le Gascogne, and I gotta tell you, it's always been rich and delicious. Right on Shrebrooke Ouest by the Hogg hardware and Cavallaro(pretty good Italian deli).
I know it's winter, but Bilboquet has some pretty special ice cream and sorbet cakes as well. Maybe make note for when it warms up a little ;)
Happy birthday :)
