Ethical Meats?

egit Jan 9, 2009 11:32 AM

Hi All --

Sorry for the not-well-defined question. I'm looking for a restaurant that serves primarily organic/sustainable/ethically-raised food. I'm looking for a place that's NOT vegetarian. Price range: economical. Blue Hill and Rouge Tomate are out. I'm figuring an app and two entrees shouldn't exceed $50, without drink, tax, tip.

Neighborhoods: Really, anything along the E/V lines... so, midtown west, chelsea, west village, east village, LES.

I couldn't find any places by searching chowhound or other internet sites that billed themselves this way.

Any thoughts?

Great! Thanks. I think cookshop is a little more expensive than I was looking for, in this case.

Green Table in the Chelsea Market might work for you. I think most if not all of the meat is organic and free range. In general, the restaurant tries to source everything locally.

You should be able to get close to the $50 at Green Table but it might go a little higher. If you like to cook, you can make a great meal with responsibly raised meats at home for well below $50 (though that might not be what you're looking for).

There is also a place on Second Avenue near St. Marks that sources all of its meats from NY farms and makes an amazingly good lamb burger but I can't remember the name. Sorry! Maybe others can help out?

        Happy Eating!

I really like it. It gets crowded Friday and Saturday nights, but otherwise not so bad. They're doing a Monday night suckling pig dinner that I've got to try soon. Also, there's a pretty good bourbon and beer selection. Oh, and save room for pie.
