Bittersweet chocolate (in blocks) - Valrhona or equivalent

Rina S Jan 8, 2009 05:13 PM

I used to buy bittersweet chocolate blocks in Fairway and Zabar's but both seem now to carry only Callebaut and not the most bitter kind... Only about 50 percent chocolate as far as I can tell.
Where can I buy good chocolate in blocks at a reasonable price? Thanks...

I'd check Jacques Torres. They sell huge blocks of chocolate for baking. The quality is amazing, though I don't know offhand whether they sell bittersweet.

Believe it or not..you can get Valrhona and Callebaut at Whole Foods. I have gotten the 70% stuff there before.

They also have El Rey - I like a Valrhona/El Rey combo in my cooking.

Last time I looked New York Cake stocked blocks of Vahlrona - several kinds.

Dean and Delucca off Prince St. has them in bulk. Just bought 3lbs of 66% the other day.
