Nashville - Sonobana
Ate a late lunch here today at the sushi bar, and we were pleased. We're new to the area, and when we were considering our move, I read about a Japanese grocery and restaurant in the Lions Gate Center but could never figure out where it was. We stumbled on it last weekend and had a productive browse in the market - they had things I was pretty surprised to see.
Lunch today was limited to sushi, but was good. We ate the Takoyaki Roll, which really did taste like takoyaki balls, if you're into that sort of thing. The spicy tuna and scallop rolls had asparagus in them which didn't work for me (but was easy to remove), but the Dyanmite roll with burdock root was great, and suitably wasabi-infused so as to burn my nose.
The best stuff was the nigiri, though, in large part because the rice was good, delicate flavor, lightly tacky and slightly warm... I've been getting a lot of icy rice and icy fish lately, so this was a real pleasure. We had fatty salmon, ika (which was served with shiso leaf and actually creamy), hamachi, white tuna, saba (surprisingly good) and toro, which was delicate and soft and stupidly cheap at only $2.75 per piece.
I was pretty pleased, and we'll be back. So thanks to the Chowhounder who mentioned (probably a year or more ago) that there was a decent Japanese place in Lion's Gate!
