new idea for dinner with friends midtown?

Having dinner with 2 girlfriends this week...

we usually end up at L'unita or Carens....
were going to try out petit castor, but after reading some not-so-great reviews on here, was wondering if anyone had other suggestions...

somewhere b/w bloor and eglinton.... preferably not sushi, but open to anything good.

thanks.

My husband and I recently went to Didier (in August) -- it was excellent. The foie gras was superb. It's at Yonge and St. Clair. The wine list was a bit disappointing and they were out of stock on a lot - our server noted they were in the midst of ordering new wines. We would definitely try it again.
Another place to try -- The Rushton at St. Clair and Christie has tons of heart and atmosphere. Some mains are better than others (some of the meat dishes tend to be overcooked). It's really fun though.

Try Mezza Misto. We had a great meal there not so long ago.

Coquine, Zucca, Quince, Tabule are all very good, all different and all within a block of each other on Yonge, south of Eg. Actually, I've heard reports that Tabule is not so good since they reopened. Which would make me very sad, because I love that place.

2nd all of the above, with an additional yay for Coquine, very buzzing and hip, great wine list and amazing service, and way better-than-average food. great night out.

I third those reccos and, along the lines of Lemon Lauren's comments, would suggest Coquine if you want more of a "night-out" sort of vibe (ie. it's got a bit more of a vibrant bar feel than the others).

In response to TorontoJo's comments re Tabule, got take out from there last night and it was as yummy as ever.

Thanks for the reassurance about Tabule! A friend of mine went on my rec and she and her guest found the food totally bland and uninteresting. :(

And yeah, for dinner with the girls, I'd pick Coquine as well. The bar area is great.

However, if the girls go to L'Unita for the food then they would absolutely love Zucca. I find they both approach their cuisine from the same angle, but Zucca's execution is superior. Still... love that L'Unita for its good food, service, and abundant eye candy.
