Last night I had the chance to try Squeal for the first time. Before I go further I should mention I attended a planned large group function, so it was more of a catering situation rather than a standard dining out. That said, the food was delicious. We had hushpuppies, seafood stuffed mushrooms, crab cakes and shrimp for appetizers. I would eat all of them again, but the group seemed to prefer the shrimp, which was a tempura style with a peppery honey based dipping sauce. As far as I could tell none of these app offerings were on the standard menu however. Then they brought out their ribs. And I was sold. The ribs were fantastic. Spicy, tender, moist. The meat fell off the bone on almost every rib I had (and I had a lot). Then they served us the main course (this was all buffet style, fyi). We had pulled pork, brisket, collard greens, baked beans, cheese grits and jambalaya. I will say firstly that the jambalaya was quite good, but you don't go to a bbq place for jambalaya, so that's nice. The pulled pork was very good, though not the best I've ever had. To fair, however, it probably is the best I've had in New Orleans. The brisket was awesome, I'd order it for sure. The collard greens and the baked beans were both good, but ultimately I had no desire to get more. And the grits were really good. I'd order them again, but you can get good grits at plenty places in this town. Bottom line: what I was hoping they wold excel at, they did. The barbecue. Ribs were the best I've had in some time. The pulled pork was very good if not quite up to par with other southern states and the brisket was delicious. This place has real barbecue and that's not easy to find in New Orleans. I know the location has been the kiss of death in the past, but I hope they find success. I will be returning.
PS They are open late and serve food late, which is a huge plus.
It was near midnight and we hadn't made our way to dinner yet last Wed night. I recalled this place was open late, so we stopped by.
It was fantastic! I had the pulled pork with half a chicken, collard greens and hush puppies. The boyfriend had brisket, smoked sausage, potato salad and hush puppies. Their hush puppies (not on the menu) have jalapenos and corn, just the right kind of spicy. The collard greens were well seasoned, not over done and imo perfect.
All the meats we tried were delicious. Moist and tender!
They have a few beers on tap and some less commonplace stuff in bottles.
All in all, we enjoyed it and I know we'll going back for dinner and late night eats.
