looking for a place to celebrate my wife's birthday on Fri. night. We like unusual food, but not so much that we will endure some trendy, high-pressure cutting edge spot.

I really liked the Orchard, thought they had great food. The space is very nice too.

I like The Orchard as well although stay away from the SHort Rib Flat Bread and the Filet Mignon Wraps. The entrees were excellent.

If you like Cuban, try Cafecito on Avenue C. Amazing food and drinks!

I would also suggest Little Giant (LES, Orchard and Broome) Great cocktails and how can you not like home made cookies baked to order for dessert!

degustation is a good spot for this...maybe 12-13 seats at the bar-only restaurant...acoustics are such that its surprisingly private despite the open room. i find the food a bit less impressive than others but its interesting and tasty. buy a bottle of priorat and enjoy a nice evening. price is reasonable considering the quality.

I second Degustation (16 seats, by the way). Other places that you may want to consider include Hearth (EV), Falai (LES) and Apizz (LES). All three are Italian, with Hearth and Falai being more contemporary foodwise, and Apizz being the most romatic (IMO) among all.

Aroma is great also. Wine bar with small dining area, owned by extremely friendly couple - fantastic homemade pastas and great wine list.
