The 2008 NOT List: 647 Dinner Club, Buenos Aires

647 Dinner Club is a marketing genius. They have more ppl writing shills on this blog praising their restaurant than any other. They pay for fancy ads in travel books and even paid someone from Conde Naste to put them on the Hot Tables of 2008 list.
Do not waste your time and money on this tragic disappointment.
After reading so many great reviews, I was excited to experience this place for myself but all I ended up with was an empty stomach and rage.
Play by play:
We are in a cab, riding through a bad neighborhood. Many "i wouldn't want to meet him in a dark alley" types with no shirts hanging outside, garbage everywhere, seedy x3. We pulled up to the restaurant... what? The ad said this was a scenic neighborhood. The cab driver informs us that we shouldn't be walking around this neighborhood. Thanks buddy!

We enter the restaurant. 10:20 PM. No one is there. Granted its a Tues, but if a restaurant is so popular one would expect some ppl. Very dark and looks used. Decor and tables are tired.
Smells of heavy musty scent, like there is a perpetual leak. Everyone who is there (10 ppl at most) are all tourists speaking English.

Unfortunately we stay bc I like to give the place the benefit of the doubt.

Later I discover there is a waterfall/large leak in the bathroom causing the odor. Plus the bathroom smells like a stable.

Ok now to the food... Wine was good (hard to really mess that up). Bread and Butter: butter smells strong, like cheese. woof. First Course: Salad... the tomatoes were about 1 hr from officially being rotten. And this is city where fresh produce is readily available. Main course: Lamb... what can I say...over done...tastes old - theme here. Dessert: getting the check as soon as possible.

So the recap is DO NOT GO there. The atmosphere and food are ROTTEN.

      You are so wrong! I on;y wish I had read this post before I and 10 friends went to 647 for New Years Eve. $200 a person !! no entertainment and a mediocre meal that embarrassed me profoundly because I was the one who picked it out for the group.There are many lovely restaurantsin BA and I travel there a lot and love it. Don't waste your time here.

            what I meant was -you are so wrong if you think someone is going to say "Club 647 is great". I'll be plain- don't go there. I had a bad experience. Don't believe all the praise that has been heaped on this place.That praise is uncalled for.

      1. Agreed. I went based on all the positive reviews and was sorely disappointed. Service was bad, food presentation was disastrous and only tasted ok.
        I got flak for not ordering the beef which everyone raved about but seriously, shouldn't a restaurant be more than a one hit wonder?!?!

        1. We ate in lots of good places in BA and 647 was one of them. I think maybe the hype around the place created some really high expectations. I liked the whole vibe of the place, hidden and away from the crowd, its certainly different from the normal restaurants in BA. At least for us we had a good experience there.

          1. I have to agree! We foolishly saved this place until the last night of our trip and were so very dissapointed. The restaurant had 4 tables in all night and it was so far from the standard we had been used to in BA. Dont waste your time or money. Same with Cabana las lilas

              I agree with you Becky, this place was dead on a friday night, lacked atmosphere, the food was average (two of my dining companions actually disliked theirs and left most of the food). the only things that impressed me were the cocktails. Seriously not worth the journey or the effort.

            2. I ate in 647 this saturday night and had a good time. I was in a group of six and we all enjoyed the food and especially the place itself. The look is very sexy and glamorous which we all loved but is obviousely not to everyones taste as the first poster demonstrated. Maybe after reading the comments here my expectations where low which meant i was not part of what appears to be the inicial hype and fall out but i am glad we went as it was a great night.

              1. Went there tonight. The dinner bread and Malbec I had were very nice. The ribeye was pretty decent, but the apps (cheese and dates on a graham cracker? and fried tomatoes with grilled chicken) were very subpar. My pregnant wife asked for her ribeye to be a little more well-done, then the waiter took the liberty of substituting her order with a pork tenderloin (I guess he thought that it would be safer). I guess there was some miscommunication there. Upon realizing that we still wanted the ribeye (the pork was fine - so we shared and ate it), he was very gracious about it and comped some beverages. Good service overall, but it felt weird to eat in an almost-empty dining room. And yes, the bathroom smelled a little funky (and the boys and girls shared the same bathroom, separated only by a wall - unique concept)

                Verdict - food was a bit better than average, but definitely overhyped a bit in earlier posts.

                1. I just went to 647 last night (my first night in town) and I'd give it a 7/10.

                  When we entered, we were asking each other if we thought it smelled like cat pee. Our table was in the very back of the restaurant and there were scented candles all over to try to mask that funk I suppose. Besides my group of 10 people, there were only about 3-4 other tables filled. I had the goat sweetbreads and the ojo de bife. The sweetbreads were good - rich and minerally and went well with the accompaniments. The ribeye was very tender and juicy and I enjoyed it, although some friends who ordered it said it was too cold and tough. Mine was lukewarm but I figured it was due to the medium rareness of the meat. My friends liked their lamb and I tried a little quail and it was a little tough but the spinach stuffing and blue cheese potatoes and polenta were very tasty. We ordered a malbec and a cab sauv for about 75 pesos each and today I saw them in a store for around 48 pesos.
