Looking for Clinton Street Baking Company Style Pancakes

If any of you have been to the Clinton Street Baking Company in Manhattan you must have had their amazing pancakes. Has anyone found anything similar to them in chicago? The blueberry pancakes with the maple butter mmmmmm

I've never heard of that place. Is it like Bongo Room or M. Henry, or more like Walker Brothers?

We have lots of places that specialize in breakfast, some with their own unique styles of pancakes. Many of them offer blueberry pancakes with real butter and real maple syrup, which isn't terribly difficult to find and sounds like what you're describing (other than mixing the butter and the maple syrup together before serving).

Perhaps you can describe the kind of pancakes you're looking for, and how they're different from "normal" blueberry pancakes?

Its a well known breakfast place in Manhattan, I have never had pancakes like this. Fluffy, light...absolutely amazing. If anyone has actually tried them, they will know what I am talking about. I love M. Henry, but haven't tried their pancakes.

Oh, the fluffy light pancakes! Of course! That narrows it down considerably; only about 95 percent of Chicago's better breakfast places meet that description. LOL!

What? You haven't tried the pancakes at M. Henry??? Their "blisscakes" are absolutely amazing. The apple pancake at Walker Brothers is also absolutely amazing. Many of the pancakes at Bongo Room are absolutely amazing, too, including one of their current specials, pretzel pancakes with white chocolate sauce. These may not be exactly like the ones from some place in Manhattan, but Manhattan may not have pancakes like the ones at M. Henry, Walker Brothers, or Bongo Room, either. Their loss. When you're in Chicago, why not get Chicago's best pancakes, instead of looking for ones just like some place in Manhattan that nobody outside of Manhattan ever heard of? :)

From what I know of Walker Brothers reputation, I'd say Walker Brothers certainly doesn't fit, but the Buttermilk Hotcakes at Bongo room might.

I've been to Griddle Cafe and Doughboys in LA, Norma's in NYC, and many other pancake spots around the block and can say Bongo Room's are the best sweet-spot pancakes I've had.

Just a bit more info about these places...

Walker Brothers is a pancake house with a fairly conventional pancake house menu (but see below); in fact, it's a franchise of the Original Pancake House, and the only franchisee that is permitted to use their own name on it. However, they really distinguish themselves from the typical pancake house in several ways. One is the decor, which has lots of stained glass (including some Tiffany originals). Another is the sheer quality; everything is just top notch, from the pancakes, to the omelets, and even the coffee. I have been to numerous non-Walker locations of this franchise, and they vary widely in quality, whereas Walker is the best in the biz. The last thing that distinguishes Walker Brothers is their big luscious cinnamony apple pancake, which is a thing of sheer joy to anyone who loves sweets. See their website at www.walkerbrosoph.com for a photo. Their German pancake uses the same batter but without the apples or cinnamon, so it's not quite as overboard sweet, but still delicious.

Bongo Room's pancakes are wonderful also. They specialize in pancakes topped with sauce, and both pancakes and sauce are yummy. My favorites to date have been the blueberry pancakes with almond panna cotta sauce (no longer on the menu) and their current pretzel pancakes with white chocolate sauce. The pancakes are HUGE (plate sized). The good news is, a standard order is three pancakes, and you can also order a ONE THIRD or a TWO THIRDS portion size at reduced prices, which enables you to try more than one item on the menu in a single visit.

              M. Henry's blisscakes are pancakes layered with mascarpone and fresh fruit, and topped with a brown sugar and oat crust, and are yummy for that reason. (So is their bread pudding.) You can see photos on their website at www.mhenry.net/gallery.html

Hey uhockey, I visited more local bakeries today - watch for my post in the "sweets" topic in the next few hours!
