Urban Oasis Hydroponic Farm in Carrollwood (Tampa)!!!

sasserwazr Jan 5, 2009 08:32 AM

Tampa Chowhounds rejoice!

I have found it. Five minutes from my home grows hydroponically-grown organic produce.
I cannot believe it. I have been blindly passing it everyday going to work since April of '08.

Tomatoes, lettuces, eggplants, peppers, broccoli, herbs and more.

It's the real deal. Locally grown produce at competitive prices.
For the last two weeks I've been getting delicious red tomatoes for $1.50 a pound.
Huge bags of lettuces for $4 each.
Fairytale eggplants at $3.50 a pound.

Unreal.
This place is just what I have wanted since I entered the foodie realm.

It is located on W. Linebaugh Ave, between Nixon Road and east of Anderson Road.
(5416 West Linebaugh Avenue, Tampa, FL 33624)

While they are only open Thursday to Saturday, Owners David and Cathy Hume have a brass bell out front that they gladly answer to the rest of the week.

Please visit this haven for deliciousness and support locally grown produce. And please tell your friends.

Happily,
Joshua

Try this place on Sunday afternoon (12 - 4)
Is a CSA, right in the middle of Town & Country.

There is a members only pick-up area, and a market with several stalls selling organic locally grown produce and Arts & Crafts.

      Interesting place

I went and was not smitten by it. What they had to sell to non-members was from outside vendors, overpriced and not very good quality IMO. I think what they are doing is great but as far as a market, it wasn't for me.

I hope that this trend continues. We have a few great small local farms in the greater Tallahassee area that I love to support. Tallahassee has a local Growers Market at Lake Ella every Wednesday where you can buy locally grown produce. We love the hydroponic leafy greens and support the other farmers by buying an assortment of vegetables to use throughout the week. One of the local growers was overheard to say that plants grown in the earth just overshadow hydroponics for flavor. I can't say if this is true...maybe a marketing ploy. From what I read about hydroponics is that the plants are fed the ideal amount of minerals and nutrients. I purchased a package of green bags that extend the life of fruit and vegetables helping me last pretty much until the next week shopping.
