Ela's Deli Columbia SC
I recently discovered Ela's Deli in Columbia SC (located on Forest Drive, near Fort Jackson's main gate right off I-77). The food and catering are fantastic.
The owners are Polish and Latino (not sure, but from Central America, I think) and there are both type foods on the menu. It is all fresh, and of the highest quality. You may have to wait a bit for your food, but it is all freshly made! They have the BEST Reuben I have ever eaten, and the second best Cuban Sandwich outside of Miami that I have tasted. The black beans are perfect, and the Pirogues are homemade and delicious. One of the days I visited a Polish / American Polish speaking soldier from Fort Jackson was ordering a ton of Pirogues for the holidays. The Polish potato salad is the hands down best I've had. Also, the Sunday brunch is fantastic. It is a hole in the wall place, but the owners are the warmest, nicest people you'll meet. I highly recommend it! There are lots of locals from upscale Forest Acres and Shandon who love the place. If you're looking for authentic Polish or Latin (broad, I know) food in Columbia, this should not be missed!
I have eaten at this place once, last year. It is interesting and unusual, especially for Columbia. I enjoyed what I had--the deli's eponymous sandwich, which seems like a Polish version of a Cuban. I hope to return to try more of the menu.
BTW, here is a short previous thread on Ela's: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/339226
And here is their website (warning: some pages have music): http://www.elasmarket.com
On the strength of your recommendation, my sister and I tried Ela's a few weeks ago. We both ordered the "Justus" sandwich and both thought it was great. I look forward to trying some of the other menu items soon.
