Affordable restaurant that could comfortably accomodate a party of 130-140?
I'm looking to potentially have a wedding in NYC, and looking for a place that could accommodate all of our out-of-town guests for the rehearsal dinner. Reasonably-priced would be excellent - preferably well under $50/pp, and I'm flexible on atmosphere - anything from fancy to more casual and laid-back. Would even consider a nicer bar space with good food.

There are several Chinese eating halls in Chinatown that very commonly accommodate large parties for just these kinds of events - for example, Harmony Palace. I assume you want something else, but I believe in never ignoring the "obvious," because what's obvious to me may be something you hadn't thought of.

How about calling REMI, an Italian restaurant in Midtown that has 4 different event rooms?

A couple of the rooms accomodate your party size. You will have to work very hard with the event planner person to stay in your price range however. A couple of years ago, I had a work event in the Rialto Room at Remi. It was lovely and the service was good. -

We are fans of Kellari's Parea. Delicious Greek food and warm, attractive ambiance. They do private parties and can accommodate up to 135 people.
If you can't keep the guest list to 135, Parea's sister restaurant in midtown, Kellari's Taverna, can do a private party for up to 220. Though we haven't eaten there, I'm sure the food is as good as at Parea.
In either case, the big question is whether your budget will suffice, especially if you intend it to cover not only food, but alcoholic beverages, tax (nearly 9%) and tip (20%) as well. But I think it's worth calling to find out.
