Jazzie Cafe Poboys [HOU]

You might have seen the small write-up in the Houston Press weekly recently but I wanted to put a good word in for Jazzie Cafe. I've been there 3 times over the past year and other members of my family frequent it much more regularly.

I admit, it is kinda...well maybe more than kinda...a dive cafe that mainly serves poboys. It has some covered outside seating and a few tables inside. When I've gone I've always seen what looks to me to be a very nice young couple working there and sometimes if I'm lucky their sweet little girl is there too.

I always get the fried shrimp poboy and fries, my husband always orders the fried oyster poboy. The poboys are always delicious, tender and succulent seafood, perfectly fried in a light crusty batter on your basic white roll dressed with mayo, tomatoes, and pickles. The fries are cooked perfectly crispy, not mushy like a lot of places, and seasoned well. While not innovative cuisine, the poboys keep you coming back. I crave them more than I let myself indulge. The HP review tried the tilapia poboy and they have other ones like catfish and beef.

The place and owners are really sweet and the poboys are great but it is an awkward location-- on 19th almost just before it ends at 18th/Ella/TCJester junction. If you don't know how to get there, look on a map before you go, it is hard to figure out at first. I think it would be popular if it were located anywhere else. Give it a go and maybe we'll see them relocate in the future. It is the kind of place you want to succeed.
