I ate there last night with my two daughters. The service was prompt, but the overall impression was that NOTHING was served hot. Not the soup, burger, fries, chicken or the side dishes. I understand that it is a high volume place, but they have a real problem here if they can't serve a bowl of soup that is not hotter than room temperature. Am I asking too much of a place like this?

Wanting food to be served at the proper temperature is definitely *not* asking too much. I can't tell you how many times my husband and I have sent back hot soups because they weren't hot enough. We've also experienced other dishes arriving at the table tepid when they should be hot. Overall, this happens more often than it should, and even high end restaurants are not immune.

While I wouldn't go so far as Nick F. does with his to comment that Virgil's is "touristy junk," I think the bbq there is just so-so. For excellent bbq in that part of town, I echo his rec of Daisy May's. And for Texas-style bbq, like him, I enjoy Hill Country, which is further downtown.

I agree with the others that your complaints are legitimate and the other joints are far superior. However, and there is always a however, perhaps you should order the BBQ in a place named Virgil's BBQ. I have eaten there twice, neither time it was my choice, it was chosen because friends were staying in nearby hotels and insisted upon going. The last time I went I called a Chowhound friend from the table and she did a quick Chowhound search and gave me some suggestions. I did the hard to find in New York lamb Q and it was very good. The other Q we ordered included a very large sampler plate and it had some tasty meat. Sure it is not smoked low and slow but I have had far worse in New York. I was expecting something like the old Wiley's or Dallas Jones junk and with that as my expectation I was pleasantly surprised.

The only things worth ordering there are the bbq lamb and the cornbread.
Other than those, Daisy May's or Smokin' Q are better choices.

They have dry-rubbed lamb ribs at Wildwood, but no where near as good as the Owensboro-style lamb at Virgil's.

Virgil's is massively overrated. Hill Country is the best in my opinion and Blue Smoke, RUB and Daisy Mays are all up there too.
