Boucherie - my new favorite

Our first meal in New Orleans this trip was Saturday lunch at Boucherie. Their boudin balls are now my favorite food in New Orleans. My husband's ribs were so delicious. The purple Que Crawl truck was in the driveway so it's hard to miss even if you never went to IRIS. It will be a definite “must eat” place on our list next visit - maybe even two meals there. We were told they will start opening for dinner in the next few weeks. I can’t wait to return and get two orders of boudin balls and the pomme frites. I would not order the bbq shrimp po-boy again though. They just aren’t the same when they aren’t cooked in the shells. It was good, just not outstanding like everything else we had there.
We went to Dick and Jenny’s Saturday night. The food there is very rich and it’s only open at night so that is a bit of a problem if you plan on sleeping anytime in the near future. The gumbo was very good but TOO rich, I could barely eat half of it. The crawfish cheesecake was very good. The shrimp and scallops with some kind of curry sauce were very good. The scallops were very fresh and delicious. I ate the scallops off my husband’s plate because I could not eat all the gumbo due to the richness of it. The café au lait crème brulet was excellent.
Sunday lunch we ate at Parkway, roast beef po-boy, shrimp po-boy and sweet potato fries. All was great but the sweet potato fries were outstanding. I think we’ll try Parasol’s next trip. It was a toss up this trip and Parkway won.
Sunday afternoon, after spending some time at Lakeview Mall, we ran over to Be Sweet Cupcakes for a box to go to snack on in the room. Very unique idea and good cupcakes. Then we dashed over to Creole Creamery for an ice cream. That ice cream is awesome. I had caramel chicory something or other and red velvet cake. Both were so wonderful.
Monday lunch was at Mr. B’s as I have been dying to try their bbq shrimp. I’m a huge fan of Pascal’s but these were right up there and go on the list for next visit. The seafood gumbo at Mr. B’s is more my style. Excellent and not too rich or heavy. My husband had the coconut shrimp and some kind of pasta seafood dish and he loved all of his. After sharing some of my bbq shrimp, he said he may take the plunge and peel shrimp next visit there. He preferred them way over Pascal’s. Mr. B’s was a great place overall, very good service and food.
After seeing the lines at Acme all weekend, we had passed. I’m guessing at times there was a minimum two hour wait. So we decided Monday evening to walk by on the way back to the hotel and see if we could get in. Nope, the line was about 40+ people long on a Monday at around 6:00 PM. Unreal. I like Acme but I never thought it was all that. It seems to be the new hot spot. So we settled for Bourbon House which was ok. We split a seafood platter. It was a little too salty except the oysters which were the best part. The pomme frites were so good! They had the good crusty hot bread too.
Tuesday we stopped at Pascal’s on the way out of town. The BBQ shrimp were very good, as usual. They changed the bread though and it’s not really crusty like Mr. B’s and Bourbon House anymore, it was kind of dry and flat tasting, and was cold. What good are bbq shrimp without some hot crusty french bread? I hope they go back to the bread they had before. If not, Mr. B’s will definitely knock them out of my favorite bbq shrimp spot.
We stopped at Café du Monde one afternoon and I got one of their frozen coffee drinks. It was delicious. The only frozen coffee drink I’ve had that was better (and not made with ice cream) is in Canada at Tim Horton’s.
I think they double fry them. I do my fries at home that way and they turn out similar. I need to try that on the sweet potato fries too. My husband doesn't care for sweet potato fries but he ate almost half of mine. The pommes frittes at Boucherie were very very good. They sprinkle parsley (I think) on them and a light sprinkling of some kind of cheese, maybe parmesan. They have a house vinegar on the table that I sprinkled on them and they were delicious. The house vinegar was good on everything.
