Snowed in with no Champagne - what cocktail should I make to ring in 2009?

That pretty much says it - we were unprepared for the snow and are now considering a more interesting alternative to the bottles of red wine in the cabinet. We have a fairly well-stocked liquor cabinet thanks to a great party a few weeks ago.

So, if you were in this situation, what celebratory cocktail would you make to toast the New Year? (And of course, a stipulation is it can't contain champagne.)

Go!

Ooh, some fun suggestions. Ultimately, my sweet brave SO went out and picked up some Perrier Jouet. What a guy. Just as well - we didn't have any guava juice or ice wine on hand. We didn't kill the whole bottle on Wednesday night, so on Thursday I made Boom Boom cocktails. 1oz dark rum, 1oz sweet vermouth, 1/2 oz orange juice, fill rest of glass with champagne. Garnish with orange slices and maraschino cherries. Everything is more festive with champagne!

PS slightly off-topic but i see from your profile that you like potato chips--have you tried the housemade chips and onion dip at Eastern Standard in Boston? something to munch on while you catch up on your champagne drinking. Also, instead of frozen grapes for the icewine martini, how about carbonated grapes http://chadzilla.typepad.com/chadzill...

No, I haven't had the chips at Eastern Standard but am now intrigued! I've only been once and didn't see them on the menu. My birthday's coming up...hmmmm.

i'm not sure whether they're listed on the menu or not but just ask for them, with dip. Boom Boom sounds interesting.

being snowed in, how about an ice wine martini? (1pt icewine, 2pt vodka, frozen grapes) if no icewine, maybe substitute some St Germain, Moscato or muscat/tokay dessert wine. Garnish with fresh snow from the driveway, of course

Any good challenge can be solved by a Web search these days.

At the Rendezvous Hotel in Singapore they're ringing in the New Year with a Prosperity cocktail: "A refreshing mix of bacardi rum, sambuca, guava juice, lime juice, grenadine syrup and soda."

Cointreau or Grand Marnier with Cranberry juice.....or vodka with anything

Sorry to hear about the bubbly.......but as long as you are with friends/family.......who cares what you drink?

            Happy New Year
