For what it's worth .... We ended up at Olana. I had been there in Oct. and thought it was quite good.
I think New Years Eve would qualify as one of the worst meals I have ever had - and that includes some very sketchy meals while traveling. The service was absolutely awful. The best part was that it was inattentive. We ordered a bottle of wine, they poured a taste and got called away and never poured the rest of the table - not the first glass or any other glass!
I had a scallop and langoustine dish. The langoustine tasted like a mushy apple - over cooked and in edible.I could go on, but suffice to say no one was happy. Fortunately the company was exquisite and we had a wonderful time.
I'll not be back to Olana!
Happy New Year to all

re: SLO
Thank you for reporting back. It's sad to hear that what has been a favorite of ours over the past year would make a mess of things. Unfortunately, this is not so unusual on NYE. I have had some bad experiences in the past, even with restaurants that were excellent at other times. I would strongly suggest that you contact the owners and make your complaints known, as they have seemed to me to be very concerned and accommodating.

I have only been to Red Cat once, quite a few years ago. It was solid, but nothing special, and rather pricy for the quality of food and level of comfort. I have been to Olana numerous times, and every time I have been very impressed by the food, service and ambience. I don't really think there is any comparison.

These restaurants are different in aspirations, vibe, price point, etc. Red Cat is a solid neighborhood-type place. I think it's festive, comfortable, and I've always enjoyed the food. It's nothing mind-blowing, but it's always well-prepared. Service is also very nice. I've only been to Olana once soon after it opened. It has higher aspirations than Red Cat (the food is more "interesting), but I didn't find it as satisfying.
