Tips for Dining, Eating and Food Shopping in California (exc. LA, SF Bay Area, San Diego)

Turf Club Catering Deli & Café, Salinas

On April Fools Day, my mom and I stopped here for lunch. The Turf Club is located on a stretch of John Street in an area that has few eating choices. Most of the menu is sandwiches and typical deli lunch fare. On this nippy day, we wanted something hot. Mom ordered the fish and chips, and I got the calamari version.

The “chips” were battered style French fries here. They’re good and crispy. However, my calamari was a tad overdone and rubbery. Also, I didn’t like the seasoning with a strong taste of musty dried herbs and too much salt.

Mom’s fish suffered from a thick and heavy batter.

Shortly after I attended a luncheon catered by the Turf Club. Crudites and assorted sandwiches were nothing special. The best item was a tomato and cucumber salad, very fresh and made with deliciously ripe tomatoes.
