What to eat in/near Belle View

I'm getting ready to move from the District to the Belle View area of Alexandria, and am looking to start learning the great places to eat and best kept secrets near my new home. Is there anything I absolutely must try before I'm even unpacked? Any guidance would be most appreciated.

  1. Unpack first. Although the area you'll be moving to isn't entirely a culinary wasteland, there's nothing you need to rush out to eat.

As you know, you're close to Old Town -- a Chowhound or Google search will reveal the good and the bad of that area. The three closest restaurants to you are Faccia Luna, Southside 815 and Farah Olivia.

In Fairfax County, there's a so-so Indian place in the Belle View Shopping Center called Dishes of India. Not worth going out of your way for...but, then, you won't be going out of your way!

The Village Wharf, down Ft. Hunt Road a mile or two from Belle View Blvd., is a good neighborhood eatery. Again, not a go-out-of-your-way place, but fine if you're there anyway. There's a nice variety store and an old-fashioned hardware store in the same shopping center.

The best ethnic choice along Rt. 1 Alexandria is the Cosmopolitan Grill - - excellent Bosnian/Eastern European food.

La Mexicana is a pretty good hole-in-the-wall authentic Mexican takeout place off Arlington Road in Alexandria, near the big Safeway on Rt. 1.

We like the Vietnamese food at Viet House (Rt. 1, in the same strip mall as Fast Eddie's), and it is very reasonably priced. But, it's not as good as what you would find in Eden Center.

The Mt. Vernon Inn, at the end of the parkway by...well, you know...isn't bad, particularly if you're already visiting George's house. Wish we could say the same for the Cedar Knoll Inn, a mile or so up from Mt. Vernon. It's a great looking restaurant, but both times we were there the food was greasy and overpriced and the place smelled funny.

Otherwise, you've got a lot (A LOT) of chains along Rt. 1.

Please post if you find anything good in your area--we're always on the lookout !

Just got back from lunch at the Cosmopolitan grill. It was great. I had the grilled Tilapia & Salad. For only $10, it came with 2 big filet's of fish and salad. Service and food were very good. Definitely will be back.
