Dim Sum: Dynasty vs. Pearl.. a short summary

Hi all, I just returned from TO. I had Dim Sum this past weekend at the aforementioned places and had nearly diametrically opposed experiences!:

Dynasty- Food- VERY average..disappointing with all the good reviews around
Good waitstaff service
Poor managerial/front desk services- Refused to validate my parking-Big inconvenience- I had to re-park my car downstairs and run up and across the street to the lower level of Nike store to withdraw $ in Canadian currency(hadn't made the exchange at that point). They gave me the run around about only validating after 6pm. (note: this experience isn't swaying my opinion on the food, I promise!).

Pearl- Food- Fantastic!! Some of the best and highest quality DimSum I've had to date.
Good Waitstaff service
Premises very attractive and clean

ALL dim sum items at Pearl were excellent. The Mango gel dessert was really good too, as well as the Purple Taro gel-fish. This was one of the best dim sum experiences for me!

    same findings as well.

dynasty has its moments, but the food and service at pearl harborfront are consistently excellent.

Are you discussing Pearl at Harbourfront or Bright Pearl or Pearl Court (all quite different I think)?

Good point. My comments were based on Pearl (at harbourfront) and Dynasty (on Bloor)...hope and trust those were the two referred to by the OP.

Pearl at Harbourfront- must agree that they have one of the best dim sum in Toronto. I prefer the Pearl over Dynasty +LWH.

RE the parking, instead of running across the street to get CAD$ couldn't you have save the trip and just pay by credit card? I'm pretty sure all underground parking in Toronto accept credit card payment. Looks like you stayed in the downtown area. Maybe next time you could try Lai Wah Heen at Dundas near City Hall. They're reputed to be one of the best in Toronto (with prices to match!) for dim sum.

Hi S. I tried paying with cc but they wouldn't let me. Made me hate Dynasty even more, lol.

I was going to try LWH but when I saw the sharkfin on the menu I crossed it off my list. And then I saw it on the Dynasty menu DOH! :P Thanks again..

I'm assuming you're against shark's fine for animal rights reasons. Just so you know, pretty much most of the dim sum places you go to will serve shark's fin on their dinner menu. I hope I didn't burst any bubble of yours.

No problem. Some do and some don't, but I'd rather patronize the ones that don't obviously. Thanks for your post.

Thx for your review...I actually preferred Dynasty over the Pearl in the past. Perhaps it's time to retry the Pearl again as Dynasty seems to have slipped a bit the last time I was there. Btw where were you visiting from?

Hi T- Thanks for replying. I'm from NYC. Dynasty wasn't bad, but just nothing special compared to Pearl--It really was one of the best DS that i've experienced in a while. The wife agrees too.
