Pittsburgh Where to find Duck, Capon, and really good meat?

SisiL Dec 26, 2008 01:07 PM

I would like to find a really good butcher where I can purchase Duck as well as a good Capon and other meats.
I've tried WHole Foods, the duck I got there wasn't up to snuff. And Giant Eagle, McGinnis, and Wholey's have only had frozen duck like bricks. I decided that trying their frozen capons wasn't worth it either.

Has anyone had any luck at the mom and pop butcher shops? Strip District meats looks interesting but I'm not sure if they will have the quality I'm looking for. I'd love to hear about other people's experiences and finds. I'm willing to do a bit of driving to the 'burbs to find what I'm looking for. I assume that there must be a resource for this stuff.

I really appreciate the help, my boyfriend and I love duck and we need a supplier! :-)

I am not certain if they carry duck regularly, but have you tried Fondi's in Sewickley? They have a great reputation for their poultry and fish.

I have purchased duck at strip district meats but they only had frozen. They said they have fresh occasionally but never when I have been there. Quality was pretty good for frozen but that is about all you will get there.

These folks are not near you but they ship (from NJ). http://www.griggstownquailfarm.com/
Also this thread, http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/517110, while about grass fed beef offers a contact for someone in Pittsburgh who has grass fed beef and may help you ID a poultry farmer or butcher who deals directly with farmers. Good Luck!

Bruno's Butcher Shop in Sharpsburg (just a few frontages down from Bona Terra) advertises all sorts of specialty meats and game. Don't know whether it's fresh or not, but it's worth a shot.

Stambolli's -- Braddock, PA. They have fresh capons and chickens. Although I do not know about duck. Call them! Their quality is the best.

The Crested Duck in Beechview (store and kitchen) and at the Pittsburgh Public Market in the Strip has duck, goose, lamb, elk and many other meats. They also make their own charcuterie.

The Farmers at Firehouse Market has several meat purveyors selling chicken, beef, pork and lamb. Often frozen but still fresh from the farm. The vendors vary by week so your best bet is to get on the email list. The market will run until November 23 on Saturdays next to Bar Marco in the Strip.

Second on Crested Duck. Very good. They have duck and duck confit. And one of the few places one can get lardo in Pgh.
