Hot Dogs in the Loop

BirdNoir Dec 22, 2008 10:16 AM

I have two friends coming in last minute tomorrow and they really want a Chicago style hot dog. I'd take them to Hot Dougs, but I won't have a car and don't think they'll want to take a 2 hour detour to California Avenue to check it out. Does anyone have recommendations for decent hot dogs downtown in the loop or /river north area?

I haven't been there in a few years, but when I worked downtown I really liked Gold Coast Dogs for their Chicago style dogs and their char-grilled Polish.

GCD is a shadow of its former self. In the area, I would recommend Portillo's at
      100 W. Ontario St.

Agreed; Gold coast is not that great anymore, its become a mediocre food court type of place.

Portillos is definitely one good option and if you want a little more of that true Chicago dog stand ambiance I'd hit Fast-tracks on Lake Street: http://www.fasttrackonlake.com/

Despite Portillo's local-chain status they put out first-rate product with excellent quality control. A standard by which all others should be judged.

Really? Darn. That's a cryin' shame!

            Portillo's is also very good.
